Body language expert Judi James says Natalie Harp’s smile and head tilt near Donald Trump suggest a desire for his approval and greater public attention The White House, Public Domain / Wikimedia Commons

Body language expert Judi James has suggested that photographs of Natalie Harp beside Donald Trump indicate what she interprets as a desire for his approval and a wish to raise her public profile.

Speaking to reporters, James said Harp's recent public appearances also appeared, in her view, to indicate an interest in increasing her visibility and attracting greater attention.

Her interpretation is based on a series of photographs showing Harp near Trump at the White House, including images of her stepping from a black car while another woman held the door open. Trump appeared to move away on the opposite side of the vehicle, while Harp emerged wearing a white outfit and heels.

Harp is a special assistant and executive assistant to the president and is frequently seen alongside Trump. She has also drawn attention for her role in providing him with printed news coverage and assisting with his Truth Social posts.

A 'VIP' Arrival at the White House

James described the car scene as resembling a VIP-style arrival. She said the assistance given as Harp left the vehicle had an 'almost ceremonial-looking' quality, particularly because Trump was moving away on the other side of the car.

The expert also focused on Harp's clothing, describing the white outfit and heels as conspicuous and questioning whether the shoes were practical for the setting.

James's wider argument was that Harp's appearance, posture and expression could be read as drawing attention rather than blending into the background of a presidential operation.

'Despite critical attention for both her role and her beaming body language, Harp's recent appearances suggest a desire to raise her profile further and gain increased levels of attention rather than any taste for blending into the background in a more professional PA way,' James said.

The quotation refers to James's assessment of Harp's public appearances. It does not establish that Harp was deliberately seeking attention or behaving unprofessionally.

What Trump's Gesture Suggested

James paid particular attention to a photograph in which Trump pointed downwards near Harp as she smiled beside him. She suggested that he appeared to be gesturing towards Harp, or possibly towards her heels.

James interpreted the combination of the smile and head tilt as gestures she associated with a desire to be liked and approved of. That does not establish that Harp was consciously attempting to win her boss's favour.

In another photograph, Harp can be seen extending her arms towards a laptop positioned in front of Trump. The image shows the laptop and Harp's posture, but does not by itself establish what was being discussed or whether a work-related exchange was taking place.

Harp has also been photographed travelling with Trump aboard Marine One. Reporters identified her in an image showing the pair stepping off the helicopter outside the White House on Aug 16, 2026. James said that appearance was consistent with her interpretation that Harp was seeking greater visibility.

Why the Images Have Drawn Attention

Harp is a recognisable member of Trump's staff and is frequently photographed near the president. Her official title is special assistant and executive assistant to the president, rather than simply personal assistant.

Reporters promoted James's interpretation on social media, describing Harp's smile and head tilt as suggesting a desire for Trump's approval.

Body language analysis can encourage readers to assign meaning to movements such as a smile, a head tilt or a pointing finger. In this case, James's assessment is based on still images and should be understood as an expert opinion, not as a confirmed account of Harp's motivations.

James interpreted Harp's conduct as suggesting an effort to raise her profile and attract attention, contrasting that interpretation with what she described as a more restrained approach to personal-assistant duties.

A president moves through a public space. An aide walks nearby and smiles. A laptop appears in another image, while a helicopter features in another. The photographs document Harp's proximity to Trump, but the significance attached to them comes from James's interpretation.

For now, that remains James's view. The images do not, on their own, establish what Harp was thinking or why she behaved as she did.
