Boy, 9, Pleads Guilty To Attempted Rape and Felonious Assault of Girl, 5, Found Strangled With Her Own Shirt

A nine-year-old boy has admitted in a Cleveland juvenile court to attempted rape and felonious assault over the beating of a five-year-old girl who was left in a field more than a year ago.

The boy entered the admission under a plea agreement on Monday 28 September 2026 in Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court, on the day proceedings began, and his disposition is scheduled for 20 November.

The second child charged in the case, a girl who was 10 at the time and is now 11, has not admitted the allegations, and her adjudication hearing, the juvenile court equivalent of a trial, opened the same day. The five-year-old survived the attack in September 2025.

An Admission on the Morning the Hearing Opened

The boy admitted two counts. He took a plea deal and admitted attempted rape and felonious assault, 19 News reported, rather than the full set of charges originally brought against him. Ohio juvenile proceedings use the term admission rather than guilty plea, and an admission allows the court to enter an adjudication and proceed to disposition, the juvenile equivalent of sentencing.

The judge made clear she wanted the case concluded. 'We need to resolve this case,' said Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court Judge Kristin Sweeney, who is presiding over both matters.

The girl's case is now being heard. Prosecutors told the court in opening statements that the state would prove charges of attempted murder, rape, strangulation, felonious assault and kidnapping, and said the five-year-old was strangled with her own shirt.

Her defence argued that the state could not prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt, according to WKYC. She has not been found responsible for any offence, and the prosecution's account has not been tested to a conclusion.

The hearing is expected to run for several days. A Cleveland police detective and children who were at the scene were among the first witnesses, and WKYC reported that the state has listed 28 witnesses in total and that the boy is expected to give evidence in the girl's case on Wednesday.

A Field off St Clair Avenue in September 2025

The attack took place on 13 September 2025 in a field near East 148th Street and St Clair Avenue on Cleveland's east side. The girl's mother reported that her daughter had been physically and sexually assaulted, and the child was found injured in the field.

Her mother has spoken publicly about the injuries, telling 19 News at the time that her daughter was unrecognisable after the attack. The Cleveland Division of Police Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit investigated the case.

Charges followed a month later. In October 2025, Cuyahoga County prosecutors charged the two children with attempted murder, rape, felonious assault, kidnapping and strangulation, and both were placed on home detention while the case proceeded.

Deemed Not Competent in April

The case stalled for months over whether children so young could take part in proceedings. On 1 April 2026, Sweeney ordered both children to undergo competency restoration through the court's diagnostic clinic after they were evaluated in March and found not competent.

That finding has since been reversed. After a period of court-ordered services, both children were found competent, clearing the way for the proceedings that began this week.

Their ages keep the case in the juvenile system. Under Ohio's transfer law, a case can be moved to adult court only where the child was at least 14 at the time of the alleged offence, which rules out transfer here. Ohio's juvenile courts are designed to focus on rehabilitation, and neither child has been named, in line with the practice of protecting the identities of juveniles in court.

The boy will learn his disposition in November, while the court spends the coming days deciding whether the state can prove its case against the girl.
