A Delta Air Lines passenger has sparked a heated debate after refusing to give up his assigned seat so a couple could sit together, only to be removed from the flight after the disagreement escalated into a confrontation with crew members.

The incident involved Santiago Daza, who was travelling on Delta flight 983 from Bogotá to Atlanta on 9 September 2026, before continuing to Orlando. His account and recordings began circulating online weeks after the incident, prompting arguments over passenger etiquette, airline authority and whether travellers should be expected to surrender their seats for other passengers.

Passenger Initially Agreed To Switch Seats

According to Daza's account, a flight attendant asked him to change seats so a woman could sit beside her husband. He initially agreed to the request but changed his mind after seeing the replacement seat.

Daza reportedly believed the alternative was smaller and less comfortable than the seat he had originally selected. Rather than accept the swap, he decided to remain in his assigned seat. The situation then became more complicated when another crew member approached him and asked for his name.

Dispute Escalated After Passenger Began Recording

Daza began recording the interaction using Meta smart glasses, saying he wanted a record of what was happening. Footage from the encounter shows crew members objecting to the recording and asking him to stop.

He was subsequently told that the captain had decided he would be removed from the aircraft. Daza gathered his belongings and left the plane before being rebooked on a later flight. The available footage does not show the entire interaction, leaving some details of the confrontation unclear.

Delta Says He Failed To Follow Crew Instructions

Delta has confirmed that Daza was removed from the flight, but the airline's explanation differs from the simplified version spreading online. The airline said he failed to follow crew instructions. However, it has not publicly specified which particular instruction led to his removal.

That distinction has become central to the debate because it remains unclear whether the seat-swap disagreement itself was responsible for the decision or whether the confrontation over recording was the decisive issue.

Several online commenters have argued that Daza was removed primarily because he continued recording after being asked to stop, rather than simply because he refused to surrender his seat.

Passenger Says Delta Offered Him $150

Following the incident, Delta rebooked Daza on another flight. He has claimed that the disruption affected his journey and resulted in additional expenses.

Daza later said Delta offered him $150 (£114) in travel credit. He has rejected the offer and continued to complain about the way he was treated.

He also claims that customer-service representatives told him they could not find a report from the captain or crew explaining his removal. That claim comes from Daza and has not been independently established.

Social Media Divided Over Who Was in the Wrong

The incident has produced sharply divided reactions online. Some viewers believe Daza was justified in refusing the seat change, particularly because he says the replacement was worse than the seat he had paid for. Others argue that continuing to record after being instructed to stop gave the crew a separate reason to remove him.

The debate has also revived a familiar argument about seat swaps: passengers may be willing to help couples or families sit together, but many believe the person being asked should be allowed to see the replacement seat before agreeing.

The exact reason for Daza's removal remains the biggest unanswered question. While Delta maintains that he failed to follow crew instructions, the publicly available information does not establish that refusing the seat swap alone was what caused him to be kicked off the aircraft.
