Ed Sheeran has found himself at the centre of a fresh backlash after addressing the controversy surrounding Macklemore's removal from his US tour, with critics accusing the singer of making the dispute about himself rather than the suffering of people affected by the Israel-Palestine conflict.

In an Instagram statement, Sheeran said he was 'appalled' by the conflict and described the suffering on both sides as a 'human tragedy.' He also attempted to clarify that Macklemore's removal was not his personal decision, saying venues and the tour promoter ultimately determined that the rapper could no longer perform.

The statement has since divided audiences, with some appreciating Sheeran's attempt to explain his position while others have mocked the emotional tone of his response and accused him of centring his own predicament.

Sheeran opened his statement by addressing the Israel-Palestine conflict directly, saying that the suffering caused by the war was devastating.

He also stressed that he had agreed to Macklemore joining his tour because he respected him as an artist and said, as with his other support acts, he allowed performers to choose their own setlists.

The singer's comments came after Macklemore performed at Sheeran's MetLife Stadium shows in New Jersey, where he spoke in support of Palestinians and said 'Free Palestine.' His performance also included his protest song 'Hind's Hall.'

The remarks generated controversy and were followed by calls for Macklemore to be removed from the remaining tour dates.

Insists Macklemore's Removal Wasn't His Decision

A major part of Sheeran's statement was his attempt to separate himself from the decision to remove Macklemore.

He said venues on upcoming tour dates had communicated that they would pull their shows if Macklemore remained on the bill. Sheeran said he spent the week trying to find a solution and 'build a bridge,' but ultimately the promoter's decision was final.

The promoter subsequently confirmed that several venues had indicated they would not allow concerts featuring Macklemore to proceed, creating the possibility of wider tour cancellations.

Sheeran therefore argued that Macklemore's departure was not something he personally ordered.

The 'Sad Boi' label has largely emerged from Sheeran's emotional presentation during his first solo show following the controversy over Macklemore's removal from the tour.

During the Philadelphia performance, Sheeran repeatedly became tearful while discussing the fallout, at one point telling the crowd that he had not known whether the tour would continue or whether he even wanted to keep being an artist. His visible distress quickly became a major talking point online.

Rather than focusing solely on the circumstances surrounding Macklemore's departure, some critics have mocked what they see as Sheeran repeatedly centring his own emotions in the aftermath. Social media reactions have consequently turned the singer's tearful appearances into the sarcastic 'Sad Boi' nickname, with critics arguing that the humanitarian crisis at the centre of the wider controversy should not be overshadowed by Sheeran's feelings.

These are reactions from critics, however, rather than evidence of what Sheeran intended. During the show, he also spoke about the suffering of people affected by the conflict and said he wanted to contribute to humanitarian relief.
