The messages attracted particular attention because they came shortly after Beckinsale publicly discussed her experience with PTSD and the difficulties people can face while dealing with trauma privately.

Earlier this month, Beckinsale shared a since-deleted Instagram video in which she spoke candidly about PTSD and how people who have experienced severe trauma can become skilled at hiding what they are going through.

She said people who 'have seen or experienced levels of horror, terror, violence' cannot simply escape those experiences and argued that many become 'incredibly good at masking it.'

'And it's sad because they become so good that they get no grace whatsoever,' Beckinsale said.

The Pearl Harbour actress also described how everyday experiences could unexpectedly trigger traumatic memories.

'Anything, smells, sounds, thoughts, feelings, can trigger them into a place that is actually like hell,' she said.

Beckinsale urged people not to assume they understand what someone else may be experiencing based on appearances.

'It really is true that when you haven't walked a mile in someone's shoes, however fancy you think the shoes are, you have absolutely no idea what they might be carrying, masking, dealing with day and night,' she added.
