Everton have sent a scout to Spain to watch Valencia midfielder Carles Gil, according to Spanish reports.

The 21-year-old prodigy, on loan at Elche, has not gone unnoticed by the Premier League's top teams. Gil is one of Spanish football's most promising young stars and Everton want to sign him before his transfer fee goes too high.

The English club sent a scout to watch Elche's La Liga 1-0 victory over Celta last week. Gil, coming back from injury, scored an unbelievable goal to secure victory and Elche got three important points to pull clear of the relegation zone.

According to Superdeporte, Valencia president Amadeo Salvo has already initiated contact with Gil's agents to protect his contract and prevent his departure.

At the moment the midfielder is under contract with Valencia until 2016 and a clause of €8m, a low figure considering his potential.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez retains an active interest in Spanish football, having signed Gerard Deulofeu on loan from Barcelona last summer.

Martinez is adamant that his side can and should aim higher than merely hanging onto sixth place in the Premier League.
