A gang member in Florida has been sentenced to over six years in prison after he accidentally fired a gun while taking a selfie in a strip club bathroom in December.

The US Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Florida announced the sentencing of 34-year-old Rorn Sorn of St Petersburg, Florida on Monday, just over two months after his guilty plea for possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.

Court documents said that Sorn and a companion had entered Club Lust, a strip club in St Petersburg, and gone into the bathroom. Employees at the club heard a gunshot and saw Sorn and the other person leave the restrooms.

When asked if they had fired the gun, Sorn was said to have told a security guard "It was an accident, man. I was just trying to take a selfie." Employees then saw a gunshot in a bathroom mirror that had entered the women's bathroom through the wall.

A short time after the 17 December 2016 incident, Sorn was arrested and found to be carrying a .40 calliber firearm along with marijuan and xanax. Sorn was not allowed to carry a firearm as he was previously convicted of buglary and attempted first-degree murder.

St Petersburg Police Departmetnt said at the time that Sorn had tried to run but "officers in the area stopped him". Authorities said he was a member of the Asian Pride Gang.

District Judge James Whittemore sentenced Sorn to six years and five months in federal prison for the offense.
