Stuart Tomlinson played for Burton Albion last season but is embarking on a new career in the wrestling world (Burton Albion FC)

Former Port Vale and Burton goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson is set to swap goal posts for ring ropes after retiring from football and joining World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in America.

Tomlinson, who started his career with Crewe Alexandra before playing for Barrow, Port Vale and Burton, has signed developmental terms with Vince McMahon's global franchise in hope of rising to superstar status on flagship shows Raw and Smackdown.

Tweeting to 8,000 followers, Tomlinson said: "Looking forward to a new job @WWE Swapping two posts and net, with four posts & ropes - USA bound as of Tomorro".

The former shotstopper, 28, previously worked as a male model before retiring from lower league football in July due to a knee ligament injury.

It is believed that Tomlinson met with WWE representatives during the entertainment company's European tour in November.

WWE broadcasts to approximately 30 million people in 150 countries and already boasts European talent in Preston-born superstar Wade Barrett and Irish wrestler Sheamus.
