French Crypto Family Faced 5am Break-In Attempt 6 Months After Father Fought Off Gunman

A French family whose home an armed fake courier targeted in April faced a second suspected crypto-related attack nearly six months later, when three men allegedly climbed the property's fence at about 5am on Tuesday.

The men reportedly wore hoods and were armed. They fled after they triggered a perimeter alarm before they could enter the house in Saint-Jean-de-Védas, west of Montpellier, according to Midi Libre and Cryptoast. Gendarmes later arrested three suspects, aged 19, 30 and 38, who were travelling in a car reported to have been stolen in Marseille. Authorities handed the investigation to the research brigade in Castelnau-le-Lez, a unit of the French gendarmerie.

French media reported that the circumstances of Tuesday's incident were still being clarified. No injuries were reported in the accounts reviewed.

First Attack Involved a Fake Courier and Gun

An attacker targeted the same household earlier this year on 11 April, when a man posing as a delivery courier allegedly forced his way into the property with a handgun and demanded access to the family's cryptocurrency accounts. Cryptoast identified the suspect as posing as a Chronopost courier.

The attacker gathered the father, mother and their children in a room, according to Midi Libre and Actu. During a telephone conversation with an accomplice, the father confronted him and a struggle followed. A shot was fired, but no one was injured.

Police arrested the suspect, a 25-year-old man from the Hérault region, in Marseille on 14 April, three days after the attack. Authorities later charged and remanded him in custody, according to reporting by Midi Libre and Actu. French reports have not established a link between the April suspect and the three men arrested on Tuesday.

Three Suspects Arrested After Second Attempt

Gendarmes arrested the three men after the attempted break-in. Gendarmes found them travelling in a vehicle reported to have been stolen in Marseille, according to French reports.

Two of the suspects had serious criminal records, according to reports. That concerns their backgrounds and does not establish guilt in Tuesday's case. The investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities are still examining the motives for Tuesday's incident. Though the household had previously been targeted in connection with cryptocurrency, public reporting has not established who was behind the second attempt.

France Recorded 77 Crypto-Linked Cases by June

The case comes as French authorities deal with a wider series of offences involving people connected to cryptocurrency. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said on 30 June that authorities had recorded 77 cases of detention, kidnapping, extortion or attempted offences linked to the cryptocurrency sector since the start of 2026.

He compared that with 45 cases recorded during the whole of 2025. Nuñez also said about 200 people had been arrested in connection with such cases, either after offences had occurred or in anticipation of attacks. The 77 figure covers several types of offences and includes attempts. It does not represent 77 completed crypto thefts or kidnappings. The three men arrested over Tuesday's attempted break-in have not been convicted. The investigation into the incident is continuing.
