Rockstar Games has confirmed the sheer scale of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto 6, revealing that it will be the largest open world in the studio's history. Spanning an area three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2, the developer is preparing players for a massive undertaking, with the main story alone estimated to deliver 80 hours of gameplay.

Ahead of the highly anticipated global launch, reportedly targeted for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, developers revealed that players will navigate a vast reimagining of Miami through the sun-drenched streets of Vice City.

Defining the Boundaries of the New Map

Rumours regarding the scale of the project have circulated for years, but details from recent interviews have provided further clarity.

The physical dimensions of the game world represent a significant expansion for the franchise. According to a recent studio preview hosted at Rockstar North, Head of Development Rob Nelson shared specific internal metrics regarding the playable area.

Delivering these figures to YouTube creator TGG during a preview event, Nelson noted that the entire region is twice the size of the world featured in Grand Theft Auto 5.

When breaking down the urban density, Vice City itself is double the size of Los Santos. Furthermore, the combined metropolitan area and its surrounding suburbs measure 11 times larger than the equivalent zones in its predecessor.

This sprawling metropolis was recently showcased in an extended gameplay reveal, highlighting protagonist Lucia skydiving off a skyscraper, alongside clips of players navigating coastal waters on jet skis, kayaks, and airboats.

Additionally, previous leaked footage has shown players piloting aeroplanes above the clouds, providing an aerial vantage point to fully grasp the scale of the digital state.

Microscopic Detail Hidden Across Vice City

While expansive maps are standard in modern gaming, balancing scale with engaging content remains a challenge. Rockstar appears intent on filling this massive footprint with bespoke details.

The upcoming title boasts well over 600,000 individual animations, a monumental increase compared to the 55,000 found in Grand Theft Auto 5 and the 300,000 featured in Red Dead Redemption 2.

This commitment to density extends directly into the interior locations scattered across the fictional state. Aaron Garbut, the boss of Rockstar North, explained that every single room in the game has been meticulously designed with deliberate environmental storytelling in mind.

'Who's sitting where, what they're drinking, the marks that are left on the table,' Garbut stated during the studio interviews. He noted that pictures on a wall will accurately reflect the people in that specific room, right down to their tattoos and family histories.

That entire sequence of background lore, he added, has been intentionally built and placed in random rooms across the huge city.

Alongside the geographic shift, reports confirm several gameplay adjustments that hark back to the roots of the franchise.

The classic six-star wanted level is making a return, raising the stakes for high-speed police pursuits across the new landscape.

Players will also have the ability to interact with and pet dogs found wandering the streets of Vice City.

With its unprecedented combination of massive geographic scale and meticulously handcrafted micro-detail, Rockstar is clearly positioning Grand Theft Auto 6 to set a new benchmark for the open-world genre when it launches this November.
