Attorney Alleges Selena Gomez Stepped Back From Mental Health Startup After Securing Investors' Money

Investors have accused Selena Gomez and her mother, Mandy Teefey, of defrauding them out of £920,000 ($1.2million) in a federal lawsuit that claims the singer stepped back from their mental‑health startup Wondermind after her name helped secure funding.

Filed on 13 August in the United States District Court of Delaware, the case alleges Gomez was sold to backers as the driving force behind marketing but failed to carry out her contractual commitments once investors' money was raised.

The plaintiffs allege the founders of Wondermind misrepresented their corporate infrastructure, executive leadership and brand partnerships while the business deteriorated. Representing the investors, attorney Jeffrey Neiman claims Gomez distanced herself from the venture after her profile and cultural influence were used to secure the startup capital.

The legal action alleges that Gomez was pitched to financial backers as the head of marketing, with the expectation that she would leverage her social‑media presence to build the brand, only to later ignore her contractual obligations once funding was secured.

Mental Health Pitch at Centre of Investor Lawsuit

A nearly 50‑page federal court filing details how Wondermind originally positioned itself as 'the world's first mental fitness ecosystem' upon launch. The company aimed to destigmatise mental‑health care through a network of podcasts, television shows, documentary films and digital content.

Investors say they were promised several revenue‑generating projects, including a mobile application, advertising deals and high‑profile celebrity cover stories. 'These representations were false', the suit reads, saying financial backers were left in the dark for more than three years.

Neiman argued that mental‑health advocacy should not be used as a marketing strategy or a vehicle for personal financial gain.

He stated that the public trust was exploited by the founders to attract audiences and investors who believed in the mission.

His assessment of the business approach was blunt, noting that 'Selena wasn't simply associated with the pitch. She was the pitch.'

The extent of the alleged internal problems only became apparent to investors following a feature published by The Cut titled 'What Happened At Wondermind?' Reporter Angelina Chapin described a turbulent environment influenced by Teefey, who reportedly disappeared for days and exhibited unpredictable behaviour and angry outbursts.

Employees allegedly witnessed Teefey sleeping in her office for days without showering. Purported drug use allegedly became so pervasive that at least one staff member began describing the workspace as a 'drug den'.

According to the court documents, Gomez made efforts to distance herself from Wondermind because of long‑running personal tensions with her mother. Investors described the singer's involvement as an 'abject dereliction' of duty, claiming she 'purported to sign a contract obligating her to perform and then ignored it entirely'.

Gomez Vigorously Denies Defrauding Wondermind Backers

The lawsuit also points to structural instability within the startup following an 'executive power struggle'. Co‑founder Daniella Pierson was reportedly ousted after clashes with Teefey and was not replaced.

Beyond failing to deliver promised products, the plaintiffs accuse the startup of neglecting basic financial obligations, including failing to pay both investors and employees on time without explanation.

The financial backers are seeking to recover their entire £920,000 investment alongside unspecified additional damages, arguing that the company concealed the alleged fraud while collapsing.

Legal representatives for Gomez have rejected the account set out in the Delaware filings. Mathew Rosengart, her attorney, criticised the lawsuit in a statement, calling the fraud accusations 'completely meritless, both factually and legally'. He said they will vigorously defend against the allegations and are preparing a motion to dismiss the claims.
