Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's first public outing together in Britain since their return to the UK has prompted speculation over how photographs of the couple at an Oxfordshire pub were obtained.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were photographed holding hands outside The Falkland Arms in Great Tew on Thursday, 1 October, during a lunch outing. The Sun described the appearance as the couple's first public outing together since returning to Britain with their children on 26 August, while some X users questioned whether the photographs had been arranged.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Hold Hands During Cotswolds Pub Date

Photographs published by The Sun showed Harry and Meghan walking hand in hand outside The Falkland Arms, a 16th-century pub in Great Tew, Oxfordshire. Other images showed the couple looking at a menu board before entering the venue.

According to The Sun, Meghan ordered gluten-free, beer-battered haddock and chips costing £18.25, while Harry chose a chicken, ham and leek pie priced at £17.95. Their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, were reportedly at school during lunch.

A source at the pub was quoted by The Sun as saying that Harry and Meghan behaved like local customers during the visit.

The outing came weeks after the family returned to Britain following several years living in California. Reuters reported on 26 August that Harry, Meghan and their children had arrived in Britain for what had been described as an extended period. The couple had left the UK in 2020 after stepping back from official royal duties and subsequently established their main home in the United States.

The Falkland Arms describes itself as a 16th-century Cotswolds pub in Great Tew. Historic England, however, dates the listed building primarily to the late 17th century, while noting that parts may be earlier. The pub's own description is therefore best retained as its own characterisation rather than treated as an independently established architectural date.

The photographs showed Harry and Meghan holding hands as they walked towards the pub. Descriptions of the outing as 'romantic' or 'relaxed' are interpretations of the images rather than statements attributed to either Harry or Meghan.

X Users Question How Harry and Meghan Photos Were Taken

Some users on X questioned how photographers knew where the couple would be, with one describing the encounter as a 'fake Pap stroll'.

The post alleged: 'Camera ppl were alerted to be there to "catch" Harry and Meghan acting like they actually like one another. Please just stop treating ppl like we are stupid. Nothing but a fake Pap stroll here folks.'

Other commenters called the photographs 'staged' and questioned how reports included details of the couple's meal. Those reactions do not establish that photographers received advance notice or that the Sussexes arranged the coverage.

The Daily Beast's Royalist column also questioned the positioning of the photographs. It said the images initially appeared with a 'NO CREDIT' label before that label was removed, raising questions about their provenance.

The column nevertheless included a different account from The Sun's royal correspondent, Matt Wilkinson. It reported that Wilkinson said the newspaper obtained the photographs 'almost by accident' and described photographers as having 'stumbled upon' the couple walking to the pub.

That account is relevant to the staging claims, although neither the photographs nor the social-media comments independently establish how the encounter came about. The criticism remains commentary about the images, not a verified account of their production.

Meghan Markle's Ellen DeGeneres Pub Outing Also Sparks Backlash

The joint lunch followed a separate outing involving Meghan, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi on Monday, 21 September.

People reported that photographs obtained by Page Six showed the three women meeting at The Three Horseshoes near Burford, Oxfordshire. Images showed Meghan chatting and laughing with DeGeneres and de Rossi outside the 18th-century pub.

That visit was described as Meghan's first photographed public outing in Britain since the family's August return. It was separate from the 1 October lunch with Harry and should not be confused with reports describing the later photographs as the couple's first joint appearance since arriving.

The September visit involved Meghan meeting friends, while the October photographs showed her spending time with Harry. Neither set of images establishes that the Sussexes arranged for photographers to attend.
