The Washington home of Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar, one of President Donald Trump's most outspoken critics, was searched by federal immigration investigators in a pre-dawn operation on 12th October, as part of an ongoing criminal investigation reportedly centred on her immigration paperwork.

Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the investigative arm of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), executed a judicially authorised search warrant in the Washington, DC, area, according to the Department of Justice. The operation marks a significant development in a long-running controversy surrounding allegations about Omar's immigration history, which the Minnesota congresswoman has previously denied.

The DOJ confirmed the search but offered few details about the investigation or what agents were looking for.

'Today in the Washington, DC area, Homeland Security Investigations executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the Department of Justice,' a department spokesperson reportedly told a media outlet. 'This enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal investigation.

Doubts Over Immigration Papers Filled by Omar's Father When She Was a Child

According to Fox News, the operation stemmed from a criminal fraud investigation involving immigration paperwork completed by Omar's late father when she was a child. The outlet cited sources familiar with the investigation for details about its focus.

The DOJ did not disclose the precise scope of the inquiry, whether Omar, 44, had been interviewed, or whether prosecutors were considering charges.

The raid follows months of public scrutiny over allegations involving Omar's immigration history. In September, White House border czar Tom Homan had reportedly said that an investigation was underway. Earlier, US Vice President JD Vance had also publicly discussed claims of potential immigration and financial irregularities involving the lawmaker.

The congresswoman has previously rejected suggestions that she was the subject of a criminal investigation. In May, she dismissed Vance's claims in comments reported by a media outlet, saying she had not been informed of a formal investigation and arguing that Republicans were promoting allegations for political attention.

Political Fallout Could Intensify

The operation comes amid an increasingly contentious national debate over immigration enforcement under Trump. Omar, who represents Minnesota's 5th Congressional District, has repeatedly criticised the administration's immigration policies and its treatment of immigrant communities.

That history is likely to intensify the political reaction to the search. Republicans may point to the operation as evidence that allegations warrant serious scrutiny. Elsewhere, Democrats and Omar's supporters could question the timing and handling of an investigation involving a prominent administration critic.

The potential legal consequences will depend on what investigators find and whether prosecutors believe the evidence supports criminal charges.

Omar was first elected to Congress in 2018 and represents a district that includes Minneapolis. Born in Somalia, she arrived in the US as a refugee and became a naturalised citizen in 2000. She later emerged as a leading progressive Democrat and a member of the group of lawmakers known as The Squad.
