A father of two has died in hospital after he was set upon by killer bees as he relaxed with his wife and children in their back garden.

The 58-year-old, who has not been named, suffered the fatal attack at his family home in Bagno di Romagna, in front of his young family.

Even though he had no history of allergic reactions to insect bites or stings, his response to the several stings was described as "rapid and severe".

The Italian newspaper, Il Resto di Carlino reported that the man's family called the emergency services to the scene but that they were unable to save him.

The man was described by one relative as a "gentle giant" who was always willing to help whenever possible.
