Daredevil Couple Behind Empire State Building Engagement Stunt Face Court Wearing Handcuff Bracelets

Daredevil rooftoppers Ivan Beerkus and Angela Nikolau turned their latest judicial proceeding into a theatrical display, arriving at Manhattan Criminal Court wearing matching faux handcuff bracelets and sleek black leather outfits.

The high-profile couple, whose daring 1 July ascent of the Empire State Building culminated in a viral rooftop marriage proposal and security shutdown, appeared before a judge for their second scheduled hearing on 24 August 2026.

On top of their matching eccentric outfits and bold bracelets, Nikolau also flashed her diamond engagement ring for the first time since their first court appearance on 2 July.

The couple had unfurled a banner reading, 'When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace.' They were immediately arrested after coming back down from the building.

Beerkus, 32, also known online as Vanya and Nikolau, 33, now face severe felony counts including reckless endangerment, burglary, and criminal mischief after allegedly slipping past building security and scaling the 104th-floor antenna mast.

While prosecutors revealed that active plea negotiations are currently underway, the defendants embraced the public spotlight outside the courthouse with an extended public kiss.

Their provocative presentation highlights an ongoing legal saga that continues to captivate global audiences, raising critical questions about urban exploration, artistic expression, and the strict boundaries of criminal law.

The Daredevil Couple's Felony Charges

According to authorities, the couple was able to slip through the building's security by entering a restricted area of the building and allegedly stayed inside the night before the climb.

Security footage recovered the day of the climb showed them accessing the upper levels before reaching the antenna around 5:00 AM. Their actions prompted authorities to address the dangerous situation and temporarily shut down the building's broadcasting equipment during the removal.

Authorities allege that the couple forced their way through a security door on the restricted floors, as evidenced by the broken locks. Investigators later said they found a broken lock on a security door on the restricted-access 104th floor, which provides access to the antenna.

The court complaint said the highest public floor is the 102nd floor and that access above it requires a key card.

The couple's defence has argued that the charges are excessive and has maintained that the stunt was an artistic expression rather than an act intended to endanger others.

A Court Appearance Turned Public Display

Despite the seriousness of the charges, the couple appeared to embrace the attention surrounding their court appearance.

After leaving the courthouse, Beerkus and Nikolau were photographed wearing decorative handcuffs while sharing an extended kiss. Nikolau also publicly showed her engagement ring, which she has said carries the engraving, 'Your full potential is on the other side of fear.'

The matching faux restraints appeared to be part of the couple's presentation as they documented their court experience online. Before the hearing, they told followers on Instagram that they would respect the legal process and accept the consequences of their choices.
