The joke followed several minutes of Trump-focused material referencing the president's recent physical and Jelly Roll's own 300lb weight loss. It did not sit well with some of his fans, particularly those who had assumed he was sympathetic to Trump.

Jelly Roll has denied using Ozempic, saying he lost the weight 'naturally' and avoided the medication because he was afraid of its potential side effects, particularly acid reflux. As a singer, he said even burping worried him because he feared the reflux could 'rip the vocal cords', which made him too afraid to take the medication.

Others tied the backlash to his heavy religious messaging, branding the timing hypocritical. Several longtime supporters said the monologue clip had cost him goodwill built over years of crossover appeal.

'I've been a huge fan of your music since your first album. Guaranteed you just lost over half of your fan base. Who knows, maybe you will compensate by gaining the mentally ill. It's crazy to watch how your glorify Jesus a few months ago, and now this,' one commented.

That testimony came in January 2024, when Jelly Roll spoke in support of the bipartisan FEND Off Fentanyl Act, legislation aimed at disrupting the fentanyl supply chain through sanctions and anti-money-laundering measures.

Combined with his public transformation and high-profile encounters with political figures, the resurfaced material fuelled accusations that Jelly Roll had downplayed his proximity to political power.

However, his congressional testimony was focused on the fentanyl crisis rather than endorsing a political party or candidate.
