Liverpool are following the movements of FC Twente striker Luuk de Jong but face competition from 15 other clubs, according to the player's agent Luis Laros.

The 21-year-old has scored 27 goals for his club this season in their attempts to win the Eredivisie title for a second time under former England boss Steve McClaren.

De Jong has two years remaining on his current deal, while an opportunity to put himself in the shop window will come during the European Championships in Poland and Ukraine, with the forward expected to be chosen in the Holland squad for the summer finals.

Luuk de Jong
De Jong has scored 27 clubs goals this season.

His agent Laros told Voetbal International: "Liverpool are following Luuk closely. But so are 15 other clubs.

"Three big clubs that have qualified for the Champions League preliminaries have told us that they are ready to open talks with Twente.

"We will keep our eyes and ears open in the next few weeks. Luuk is feeling very well at Twente, but if the club fails to qualify for Europe, staying put is a less attractive option."

With two domestic games left, Twente lie four points off the Champions League spots, while a place in the Europa League is far from confirmed.

The striker is therefore likely to look to move to a club who have qualified for Europe's premier club competition, as he looks to further his career.

Liverpool have endured constant problems in front of goal this season, with Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll guilty of spurning numerous chances as the club's league form has continued to disappoint

Therefore, the club might feel adding another striker to their forward line could help solve their problems.

However, having missed out on Champions League qualification for a third consecutive year, the club is on the back foot in their pursuit of De Jong.

Among those 15 clubs competing with Liverpool for De Jong's signature could include Everton and Newcastle United, with the pair having previously been linked with the striker.

The Magpies, unlike The Reds, are still in contention for the top four, and are currently level on points with Tottenham Hotspur ahead of Wednesday's trip to Chelsea.
