Travel website TripAdvisor has named London as the number one destination for 2016, part of its eighth annual Travellers' Choice awards for destinations. The UK's capital rose five places from 6th in 2015 to claim the top spot.
The list was compiled according to an algorithm that takes into account quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions in any given destination each year. The list is based on millions of reviews and opinions posted on the TripAdvisor site.
TripAdvisor spokesperson, James Kay, attributed the win to the legacy of the Olympic games in the capital: "This is the first time since 2012 that London has topped our world award rankings, proving that the capital's tourism industry is still reaping the benefits of the Games' legacy."
Boris Johnson, Mayor of London, said, "London is undoubtedly the cultural capital of the world thanks to our iconic attractions, buzzing entertainment scene and amazing museums and galleries. Coupled with our abundance of top-notch hotels and restaurants offering every type of cuisine one's taste buds could desire, it is no wonder that London has been named the best travel destination in the world. It is an incredibly dynamic city, with something for everyone and we look forward to welcoming even more visitors to our wonderful metropolis."
London beat traditional tourist spots like Istanbul, Paris, Prague and Rome to get the title.
Within the UK, the North beat the South, with seven out of the top 10 being above the Midlands. Out of all 10, the cheapest destination by average hotel rate on TripAdvisor is Blackpool.
Chief marketing and communications officer at London & Partners, the Mayor's official promotional organisation for London, Chris Gottlieb, said: "London boasts an unrivalled mix of history, cutting edge contemporary culture and a rich calendar of special happenings to entice international visitors and encourage online reviews."
