MAGA Influencer Who Accused Officials of Secretly Trying To Get Her in Trouble Exposed as a Pentagon Employee

Jennica Pounds, the MAGA influencer known to nearly one million followers on X as DataRepublican, thought she had uncovered a government trap.

She accused a senior Trump administration official of trying to entice her into committing a crime by handing her government documents about Cuba.

Then, in the middle of the online uproar, another revelation landed. Pounds was serving as a Special Government Employee at the Pentagon. The Defense Department subsequently confirmed her employment.

The twist turned a bizarre MAGA-on-MAGA feud into a broader dispute over government employment, journalism and transparency.

The Alleged 'Deep State' Trap

The dispute began after Sarah B. Rogers, the State Department's undersecretary for public diplomacy, gave Pounds access to Biden-era government documents concerning Cuba.

The apparent pitch was simple enough: Rogers hoped Pounds would publish the material as an exclusive. Pounds was initially enthusiastic, according to messages she later shared publicly.

Then her mood changed. Pounds became suspicious of the markings on the documents and concluded that she could be walking into a trap.

She accused the so-called 'Deep State' of trying to get her to leak what she believed was sensitive information, potentially exposing herself to criminal prosecution. In a now-deleted X thread, Pounds wrote, 'It's not okay when the Deep State sets you up to commit a crime.'

She added, 'I have never been more angry in my life.' Those accusations remain unsubstantiated and reflected Pounds' interpretation of what was happening. No evidence has emerged showing that Rogers intended to entrap her.

Rogers Fires Back

Rogers rejected that interpretation and offered an explanation for the markings that had alarmed Pounds.

'The "markings" are FOIA redactions required even for voluntary disclosure,' Rogers wrote, referring to redactions under the Freedom of Information Act.

She went further, offering to disclose the documents herself to demonstrate that they were not part of an entrapment scheme. But by then, the fight had already moved beyond the original dispute over the Cuba documents.

The Pentagon Revelation

During the MAGA-on-MAGA battle, the X account AF Post identified Pounds as a Department of Defense employee.

The Pentagon later confirmed that 'Ms. Pounds serves at the Department of War as a Special Government Employee.'

The revelation was striking because Pounds had previously been part of the credentialed Pentagon press corps. According to multiple reports, she had not publicly disclosed her new government role before the dispute brought it to wider attention.

Pounds then addressed the revelation herself. She said she had begun working as a Special Government Employee for the 'Department of War' in July, explaining that she wanted to serve the country in a more hands-on capacity.

She also said her Pentagon press credentials had expired in June and that she did not seek to renew them. Pounds said she was no longer a member of the Pentagon press corps and no longer attended briefings or events as a journalist.

That distinction matters. Pounds was not simultaneously serving as a credentialed Pentagon reporter and government employee, based on her account of the timeline.

She had moved from a role involving Pentagon press access into government employment, and that transition became widely known only amid an explosive dispute involving allegations against another government official.

From Press Access to Government Service

The timing gives the story much of its unusual force. Pounds had been operating publicly as DataRepublican, a prominent pro-Trump online personality, and had held credentials granting her access to the Pentagon press corps. By July, she said, she had taken on a government role instead.

There is no evidence in the available reporting that Pounds continued working as a credentialed Pentagon journalist after taking the government position. She explicitly said she no longer attended Pentagon briefings or events in that capacity.

But the previously undisclosed transition raises questions about transparency because audiences following her political commentary were not initially aware that she had joined the government she frequently discussed. That makes the timing of the revelation far more consequential than an ordinary social media spat.

A Family Intervention Makes Things Stranger

Then came an even more bizarre subplot. An account that appears to be operated by Pounds' mother, called Mom of Data Republican, entered the fight and defended her daughter while attacking Rogers.

In a now-deleted post, her mother accused Rogers of taking advantage of someone who was 'not inherently cunning like you are'. She also dismissed the supposed 'gift' of documents with the blunt phrase, 'GIFT, my a*s', before calling for Rogers to resign. She later apologised to Rogers for demanding her resignation.

The MAGA Feud's Bigger Twist

What began as Pounds warning her followers about an alleged government trap ended with the public learning something unexpected about Pounds herself.

The central facts are straightforward: Rogers provided Pounds with government documents about Cuba. Pounds interpreted the exchange as a potential attempt to entrap her.

Rogers disputed that interpretation; and Pounds' government employment subsequently became public and was confirmed by the Pentagon.

The episode leaves the original accusation sitting alongside a striking irony. The MAGA influencer who believed officials were secretly trying to get her into trouble was herself revealed, in the middle of the fight, to be working inside the federal government.

And that unexpected reversal is what transformed a social media confrontation into a broader story about transparency, government employment and the increasingly blurred boundaries between political influencers and official Washington.
