Police are appealing for information after a man was left with "life-changing injuries" after being assaulting during a burglary in southwest London.

The 55-year-old man was attacked in his home in Wimbledon after opening the door to three masked men on the evening of 11 August.

Once inside, one of the suspects violently assaulted the man while the remaining two attempted to tie a 50-year-old woman who was at the address to a chair.

Two residents who were upstairs at the time of the incident were able to call 999. Police arrived at the address on Kings Road within minutes to arrest two of the men who are now held in custody.

The third suspect, believed to be in his late 20's, managed to run off in the direction of Wimbledon Town Centre. Police are now appealing for any information regarding his whereabouts. Officers are also keen to speak to anyone who saw a silver Volkswagen two-door cabriolet-style car which was believed to have been used by the suspects.

The 55-year-old man was taken to a south London hospital with multiple facial injuries and bruising to the body and limbs. He is undergoing eye surgery and his condition is described as life-changing.

A number of personal items were taken from the house during the burglary, some of which have been recovered after being discarded by the suspects.

Detective Inspector Dan O'Sullivan, said: "I'm appealing to anyone who was in the area between 21:00-23:00hrs and may have heard or seen the events that night. We are also seeking information regarding a silver car the suspects may have used.

"The level of violence used was extreme and has left a victim seriously injured and traumatised. The fast response to the 999 call ensured that two suspects were apprehended and the victim could receive immediate first aid.

"I must stress that this appears to be an isolated incident, and such cases are thankfully rare. However, this serious attack is now subject of a meticulous inquiry whilst we work to support individuals affected by the events and the local community. Officers are currently conducting high visibility patrols and speaking to residents to answer their concerns."
