Is Nancy Guthrie Dead? Ashleigh Banfield Believes So, Raises Troubling Ransom Theory in Missing Woman Case
Nearly two months on, the lack of ransom collection raises questions about why no effort has been made to retrieve the money or claim the reward

Questions surrounding the fate of Nancy Guthrie have intensified after journalist Ashleigh Banfield raised the possibility that the missing 84-year-old may no longer be alive.
Guthrie was reported missing on 1 February from her home in Arizona, sparking a major missing person investigation. Nearly two months later, there has been no confirmed communication from the alleged kidnappers and no evidence that any ransom has been collected, raising fresh doubts about the case.
Authorities have not confirmed the authenticity of any ransom notes reportedly sent to media outlets demanding millions in exchange for Guthrie's safe return.
Unanswered Ransom Demands Raise Alarm
In the days following her disappearance, multiple ransom notes were reportedly circulated, requesting payment in exchange for Guthrie. Her family expressed willingness to pay the ransom but insisted on proof that she was alive before releasing any money.
Despite this, no such proof has been provided, and contact with the alleged kidnappers appears to have stopped.
The absence of ransom collection has become a key point of concern among investigators and commentators, with questions emerging over why no attempt has been made to retrieve the money or claim the reward.
Expert Speculation on Possible Outcomes
Speaking on her Drop Dead Serious podcast, Ashleigh Banfield discussed the troubling scenario that the ransom may never be collected.
Investigative producer Allison Weiner suggested that the situation could be too risky for the perpetrator to come forward if Guthrie is no longer alive. She indicated that legal consequences may prevent anyone involved from attempting to collect ransom funds in such a case.
Weiner said the risk of imprisonment could deter any attempt to claim payment, noting that a kidnapper would not be able to safely collect money if harm had come to the victim.
Banfield echoed similar concerns, pointing to the unusual silence from those allegedly responsible for the kidnapping.
Evidence at the Scene and Competing Theories
Details from the investigation suggest signs of a violent struggle at Guthrie's Catalina Foothills property. Reports indicate that blood was found inside the home, including blood drops, as well as blood spatter on the front door, porch, and driveway.
These findings have led some experts to question whether more than one person may have been involved.
Weiner suggested the presence of blood evidence could indicate multiple individuals, stating it may not have been a one-person operation. However, Banfield disagreed with this assessment, arguing that a single perpetrator could have carried out the crime.
Banfield maintained that it is possible for one individual to abduct and transport an adult, citing past cases where similar actions were carried out alone.
Questions Over Ransom Notes and Investigation Strategy
One of the major points of public interest has been why authorities have not released the ransom notes for public viewing.
Private investigator Lisa Ribacoff-Mooney explained that releasing the notes could complicate the investigation. She warned that making the letters public could lead to copycat messages, potentially obscuring genuine communication from the suspect.
She added that exposure of the language, tone, or formatting used in the ransom notes could compromise the authenticity of any future correspondence and hinder efforts to identify the individual responsible.
Ongoing Investigation and Unanswered Questions
Law enforcement continues to investigate the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, but key questions remain unanswered. Authorities have not confirmed whether any ransom notes are legitimate, nor have they disclosed further details about suspects or potential leads.
A $1 million reward (roughly £752,000) remains on offer for information that could help locate Guthrie or identify those responsible for her disappearance.
As the investigation continues, the lack of communication, absence of ransom collection, and conflicting expert opinions have only deepened the mystery surrounding the case.
