NYT Exec Faced Child Abuse Charge and Domestic Violence Claims From Wife Before In-Laws Shot Him Dead

A New York Times technology executive was fatally shot at a California sports complex, with police arresting his parents-in-law on suspicion of murder just months after a series of legal disputes involving the executive and his wife.

Jonathan McKinsey, 40, was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California, on Saturday afternoon, 26 September. He was pronounced dead at the scene, while his in-laws, Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, were detained nearby and booked into Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of murder.

New York Times Executive Jonathan McKinsey Killed in California Shooting

A Dublin Police Services sergeant was driving near the sports complex at about 3:08pm when he spotted McKinsey lying in the parking lot. At around the same time, police dispatchers began receiving multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting.

Witnesses helped officers locate two suspects who remained in the area. Police identified them as Zhang and Chen, a married couple and McKinsey's parents-in-law, while authorities said there were no outstanding suspects and no known threat to the public. The circumstances that led to the shooting remain under investigation.

A spokesperson for The New York Times confirmed McKinsey was the victim and said he had worked for the newspaper since 2023. He became director of engineering for games player experience in December 2025, having previously held engineering roles at Splunk and other technology companies.

McKinsey was married to Candice Jang, the daughter of Zhang and Chen. Court records indicate the couple married in Texas in 2011, while a neighbour told the San Francisco Chronicle that they had three children. McKinsey had reportedly moved out of the family home before his death.

McKinsey Was Charged With Two Counts of Misdemeanour Child Abuse in 2025

The circumstances surrounding the family had already entered the courts before the fatal shooting. Alameda County records show McKinsey was charged in October 2025 with two counts of misdemeanour child abuse.

According to a probable cause declaration reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, Jang contacted Dublin police and alleged that McKinsey had struck her six-year-old son in the face with an open hand. When deputies subsequently went to the home, they reportedly found the couple's two-year-old child alone upstairs while McKinsey was out shopping.

McKinsey pleaded not guilty to both charges and was released from custody on the condition that he enrol in and complete 12 parenting classes, according to court records cited by the Chronicle. The records concern allegations and charges, rather than findings that McKinsey committed the offences.

Wife Sought Restraining Order Before Divorce Proceedings

McKinsey and Jang were also involved in separate legal disputes during the year before his death. Jang sought a domestic violence restraining order against McKinsey in October 2025, while McKinsey sought one against Jang in December.

McKinsey filed for divorce in December 2025, and the pair continued to deal with child-custody litigation in 2026. Court records referenced an alleged 2018 domestic violence incident in which Jang made allegations against McKinsey, although it has not been established that any of the earlier disputes were connected to Saturday's shooting.

McKinsey's In-Laws Face Murder Allegations

Zhang and Chen were arrested on Saturday on suspicion of murder and are being held without bail. SFGATE reported that jail records also listed allegations including first-degree murder, conspiracy, willfully discharging a firearm with gross negligence and child abuse, although the records did not explain the child-abuse allegation.

Police have not publicly explained the child-abuse allegation against the couple, nor have investigators disclosed what prompted the confrontation. Their suspected involvement in McKinsey's death remains a matter for the criminal justice process.

The pair are scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday. Dublin Police Services said its investigation remains active as detectives continue examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
