A man has been killed following a police chase near Old Trafford – the home of Manchester United football club. The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is appealing for witnesses after a pursuit ended in a fatal collision at the junction of Sir Matt Busby Way in the early hours of Sunday morning.

AN IPCC statement said: "The pursuit began at about 3.28am on Sunday 21 February and ended shortly afterwards when the Mercedes police were pursuing on the A56 Chester Road was involved in a collision with a mini at the junction of Sir Matt Busby Way, after which it collided with a roadside pole."

The 24-year-old man driving the Mercedes was confirmed dead at the scene, while two women who were in the Mini were taken to the Royal Salford Hospital with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

The IPCC's investigators have already begun to collect evidence relating to the collision, including taking initial accounts from the officers involved, gathering CCTV footage and retrieving the data recorder from the police vehicle. Witnesses should contact the police watchdog on 0300 020 0096.
