Ukrainian Influencer Faces Legal Action After Viral Video Shows Him Sitting on Sea Turtle While Holding Hatchling

A Ukrainian fitness influencer faces legal action in Oman after footage appeared to show him sitting on a protected sea turtle while his partner also posed on the animal and a hatchling was handled at a nesting site.

Vadym Oleynik and Olena Kravchenko were filmed in the Ras Al Hadd area, where sea turtles come ashore to nest. The footage appeared to show Oleynik climbing onto the shell of an adult turtle, while other images showed Kravchenko sitting on the animal and Oleynik holding a newly hatched turtle.

Oman's Environment Authority said the behaviour violated laws and regulations protecting wildlife and confirmed that necessary legal action had been taken against the individual concerned. Reports that the couple were detained at an airport have circulated, but no official confirmation of a detention has been given.

Viral Footage Shows Couple With Protected Turtles

The footage was initially shared online by Oleynik before being circulated more widely after conservation groups highlighted it. Images appeared to show the couple posing on the adult turtle, while separate footage showed a hatchling being handled.

Italian conservation project Biologicamente was among the groups to draw attention to the footage, criticising the treatment of the turtles. The incident prompted wider backlash from conservationists and social media users.

Oleynik later apologised for his actions. He said he had not understood the rules governing interactions with the turtles, described what happened as a mistake and said he had not intended to harm the animal.

The original footage was subsequently removed from his social media account, although copies continued to circulate online.

The Environment Authority has warned visitors not to touch, approach or disturb sea turtles at nesting sites. It said the behaviour shown in the circulating footage breached wildlife-protection laws and urged tourists, residents and citizens to follow the rules governing protected areas.

Oman Confirms Legal Action

The incident took place in the Ras Al Hadd area of Oman's South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, a recognised sea turtle nesting area.

The Environment Authority said it had followed the circulating footage showing a tourist disturbing sea turtles and confirmed that 'the necessary legal action' had been taken against the individual concerned under applicable laws and regulations.

The authority did not publicly identify the individual, specify the offence or announce any potential penalty.

Reports have claimed Oleynik and Kravchenko were stopped or detained at an airport after the footage became known. However, those reports remain unconfirmed by Omani authorities. Oleynik has continued posting on social media since the incident and has publicly apologised.

Legal Status and Possible Penalties Remain Unclear

The legal status of the case remains unclear, with no publicly announced charges or penalties against Oleynik or Kravchenko.

The authority's statement confirms that officials regard the conduct shown in the footage as a violation of wildlife-protection regulations, but it has not disclosed what legal measures were taken or whether further action is expected.

Oleynik, who has more than 200,000 Instagram followers and is known for fitness and calisthenics content, has said he did not intend to harm the turtle. The investigation and any potential proceedings will determine what consequences, if any, follow from the incident.
