Detectives investigating the suspected murder of Merseyside PC Neil Doyle have until tonight to question a second man.

Magistrates have granted police more time to question a 30-year-old man from Huyton, Merseyside, they arrested on Sunday on suspicion of murder.

The extension comes as detectives also interrogate a 28-year-old man, also from Huyton, on suspicion of murder.

PC Doyle was killed in the early hours of Friday after he was attacked in Colquitt Street, Liverpool city centre, in the early hours of Friday.

Two other off-duty officers were also injured in the incident.

The men were reportedly targeted after they were recognised as police officers.

PC Doyle's wife, Sarah, issued a statement in the wake of his death: "Neil was very well loved by all of his family, friends and colleagues and it is a great loss to us all.

"We are finding it extremely difficult to come to terms with what has happened and need time to be left to grieve."
