A horrific double homicide at a popular Pennsylvania resort has taken a dark financial turn after family members revealed the suspect's decision to empty her husband's retirement account.

Metallica Rose Harrison, 27, stands accused of fatally stabbing her 36-year-old husband, Charles Harrison, and their three-year-old son, Tristan, in a guest room at the Great Wolf Lodge in Scotrun, Pennsylvania. During a subsequent 911 call, she also admitted trying to commit suicide, but was too weak to do so at the time.

Following her arrest, new insights, including the liquidation of the family's long-term savings, point to the possibility that her actions were premeditated.

Premature Retirement Drain

The suspect's stepmother, April Thetga, disclosed that Metallica Harrison recently used her husband's 401(k) retirement savings to finance an extended three-week luxury stay at the Poconos waterpark resort as an early Christmas gift for young Tristan. She also used the money to remodel their kitchen at home.

Harrison had informed Charles and the family that she was, in fact, using the account to do the remodelling. What they did not know was the retirement funds were also paying for the stay at the resort.

April indicated that it was odd they had taken their 401(k) out but no one anticipated that it would precede the violent deaths of Charles and Tristan.

The family also spent three weeks at the resort where rooms can exceed more than $600 (£452) a night, completely depleting the withdrawn savings. Their extended checkout date was Tuesday, 13 October.

With utility shut-off notices waiting at home and no money left, the family was facing an impending financial collapse once they returned. Charles and Tristan were killed a day before the intended check out date.

The Knives Came From Home

Investigators also determined that the teal knives used to stab Charles and Tristan did not belong to the resort's cutlery. A subsequent search of the family's home back in Towanda revealed an identical set of knives to those at the crime scene.

It showed that Metallica had deliberately packed butcher and steak knives for the trips weeks before she killed her family. This detail, combined with the complete liquidation of the retirement fund, points to a calculated timeline.

In a confusing addition, Metallica reportedly initiated a video call with her family hours before the incident took place. During the conversation, she appeared calm and affectionate, showing no indications of distress or rage.

The façade of normalcy left the family blindsided when police called to inform them of the incident on Tuesday, 13 October.

Criminal Charges and the Legal Aftermath

Monroe County District Attorney Mike Mancuso confirmed the details during a press briefing, characterizing it as a violent domestic tragedy. He also reassured the community there was no active threat to the public.

Harrison, who previously worked as an in-home caregiver, was also hospitalized for minor injuries before being transferred into police custody. She currently faces two counts of criminal homicide.

Surveillance footage from the resort reportedly showed no other individuals entering or leaving the room between the couple's return on Sunday night and Harrison's emergency call at 3:13pm the following Monday.

Harrison was also formally arraigned and is being held without bail at the Monroe County Correctional Facility. Representatives of the Poconos resort have expressed deep heartbreak concerning the incident, affirming full cooperation with the Pocono Township Police Department.
