A Georgia woman contacted emergency services about her husband's behaviour earlier in the day before five members of the same family were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide at their home.

Authorities revealed that the woman had contacted police to complain about her husband smoking indoors, claiming his cigarette smoke was harming her. The unusual complaint preceded a deadly shooting that left four relatives and the suspected gunman dead.

The tragedy unfolded on Friday, 9 October, at a residence in Douglas, approximately 200 miles southeast of Atlanta. Police later confirmed that the woman had contacted emergency services earlier that day as among those who died. Investigators have not established what prompted the violence.

Wife's Troubling Complaint Hours Before Deadly Shooting

Douglas Police Chief Brannen Pruette disclosed during a Saturday press conference that officers had previously been summoned to the property after receiving a complaint from a woman about her husband smoking inside their home. According to Pruette, the woman complained that her husband was killing her with his cigarette smoke. Emergency medical personnel subsequently transported her to a medical facility.

'It's my understanding the call was placed by the wife, the female victim. She called and was complaining about the husband who was in the house smoking, and she said he was killing her with the smoke,' Pruette said, per a WSB-TV 2 report.

Authorities have not explained the circumstances surrounding that earlier call, including whether officers spoke with the husband or identified any signs of an escalating domestic dispute. Police also have not disclosed what happened after the woman received medical attention or when she returned home. The exact sequence of events between her complaint and the subsequent shooting remains unclear.

Five Relatives Found Shot After Emergency Call

At approximately 11.09pm on Friday, Douglas police received another emergency report concerning gunfire at a property on Robin Lane in the Touchton Wood neighbourhood. The call reportedly came from one of the victims. Officers responding to the address discovered four adults who had already died from gunshot wounds.

A fifth adult was still alive when emergency responders reached the residence. The critically injured victim was transported to Coffee Regional Medical Center but subsequently died. Police determined that the deceased were immediate relatives who shared the property and said the suspected shooter was among the dead.

Investigators believe one family member fatally shot four relatives before taking their own life. However, authorities have not publicly identified the suspected gunman or explained the relationships between all five individuals. Their names and ages have also been withheld while investigators continue examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Coffee County Sheriff Fred Cole acknowledged the devastating impact of the five deaths on the victims' loved ones, saying the incident had also been deeply distressing for everyone who responded to the scene. 'Five individuals lost their lives, and their family and friends woke up hurting today,' Cole stated. 'This was a hard scene for everybody involved.'

Authorities Investigate Second Murder-Suicide in Three Months

The deaths have prompted renewed concern among local officials after Douglas City Manager Charlie Davis revealed that the community had experienced another murder-suicide within the previous three months. Davis addressed domestic violence during the Saturday briefing, emphasising that such tragedies can affect families regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances.

Authorities confirmed that the victims' bodies would undergo post-mortem examinations at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab. Police have reassured residents that they have uncovered no evidence suggesting anyone else remains in danger because of the incident. The investigation remains active, with several significant questions about the family's final hours unanswered.
