'Breaking Bad' Star RJ Mitte Dies at 34; Suicide Reported After Accounts of Financial Hardship
The actor and disability-rights advocate died in Brownsville, Texas, on 12 October as authorities continue their investigation

RJ Mitte, best known for playing Walter 'Flynn' White Jr. in the AMC crime drama Breaking Bad, has died at 34 in Brownsville, Texas. His representatives confirmed his death on Monday, 12 October, without giving a cause.
An entertainment news outlet reported that it was told Mitte died by suicide, and said a county official confirmed his death to the outlet. A justice of the peace's office in Brownsville said an investigation was under way, and no official cause of death has been publicly announced.
Representatives Pay Tribute
In a statement, Mitte's representatives described him as a 'beloved actor, philanthropist, and passionate disability rights advocate'. They asked for privacy for his family and loved ones.
The statement did not address the circumstances of his death. The report of suicide comes from TMZ, which said it was told this by sources, and the circumstances remain under investigation.
Mitte Spoke Publicly About Tax Debt
In a late-2025 appearance on The Iced Coffee Hour, a podcast about business, money and careers, Mitte said he had paid more in taxes than he earned from Breaking Bad. 'I did have a bad business manager,' he said.
He said he wrote cheques to cover his taxes, but that the manager sent him a fake filing instead of paying. He said the bill came about five years later, after interest compounding at roughly 17% a year, and that it took him ten years to pay off.
Mitte said responsibility for unpaid taxes still fell on him as the taxpayer. His advice to others was to keep close track of their money: 'Record it, mark down every dollar, keep track of it.' He also said that if a tax letter arrives, people should call an accountant or attorney and ask a forensic accountant to establish what happened.
Those remarks reflect Mitte's own account of the dispute, and no legal finding on them has been identified. No cause or contributing factor in his death has been established, and his earlier comments should not be read as an explanation of it.
His Role in Breaking Bad and Disability Advocacy
Mitte appeared across all five seasons of Breaking Bad, which aired from 2008 to 2013. He played Walter White Jr, the son of chemistry teacher Walter White, who becomes a methamphetamine manufacturer.
The character, also known as Flynn, has cerebral palsy, the condition Mitte lived with. His own form of the condition was milder than the version portrayed by his character.
Outside acting, Mitte served as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy, a US nonprofit supporting people with cerebral palsy, and for Shriners Children's, a paediatric healthcare network. He was also president of The Mitte Foundation, which supports educational and community organisations.
His advocacy centred on disability inclusion and the representation of disabled people in entertainment, an area where he became a prominent voice during and after the series.
Career Beyond the Series
Mitte continued acting after Breaking Bad. His credits included the drama series Switched at Birth, in which he played Campbell Bingman, and the films The Recall and The Oak Room. He also appeared in The Guardians of Justice, a superhero satire released in 2022.
He was born on 21 August 1992 in Jackson, Mississippi, and was 34 at the time of his death. The investigation into his death is continuing.
