Haas battled Kei Nishikori in the third round and defeated the Japanese in straight sets, 7-6(3), 6-2. The 11th seed started on the backseat but slowly found his footing in the game to emerge victorious in the tie-break (7-3). In the second set, the German easily brushed aside the challenge from the 19th seed to book his place in the fourth round.
Meanwhile, Federer edged Dmitry Tursunov in the previous round to secure his progress into the Round of 16. The world number eight was engrossed in a hard fought battle for one hour and 45 minutes with the Russian to win 7-6 (7), 7-6(2).
The former Swiss number one is seeking to reclaim his trophy at the Indian Wells having won it for the first time in 2012.
Haas and Federer have met each other 15 times and the Swiss holds a convincing 12-3 lead against the former.
BNP Paribas Open History
Haas and Federer were scheduled to face in quarterfinal of the 2008 edition of the Pacific Life Open as it was then known. However, the German backed out from the tournament because of a sinus infection.
