Social Security Final September 2026 Payment Schedule and Projected 2027 COLA Estimates Explained
The final payment is scheduled for beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st, while inflation data will shape the projected 3.5% COLA

The final regular Social Security payment for September 2026 is scheduled for Wednesday, 23 September, primarily covering beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st, according to the supplied MundoNOW report. The payment comes as attention turns to the projected 2027 COLA, with two of the three months used in the annual adjustment now accounted for.
Social Security September Payment Reaches Final Group
For context, the Social Security Administration's regular September schedule is divided according to the birth date of the person whose earnings record the benefits are based on. Beneficiaries born from the 1st to the 10th are scheduled for the second Wednesday, while those born from the 11th to the 20th are scheduled for the third Wednesday.
The final group, covering birthdays from the 21st to the 31st, is scheduled for the fourth Wednesday, which falls on 23 September. This payment closes the regular September schedule for beneficiaries in that group.
There are exceptions to the regular timetable. People who began receiving benefits before May 1997, as well as those who receive both Social Security and SSI, follow a different payment schedule. The amount deposited also varies between beneficiaries, mainly according to their earnings history and the age at which they began receiving benefits.
The September payment arrives less than a month before the inflation report that will provide the remaining data needed for the 2027 COLA calculation. That makes the timing of the final September payment notable for beneficiaries following the potential adjustment.

2027 COLA Projection Stands at 3.5%
Attention is now focused on the inflation figures behind the next annual adjustment. The CPI-W recorded a year-over-year increase of 3.4% in July and 3.5% in August, providing two of the three monthly figures used to determine the annual adjustment.
Following the August figures, The Senior Citizens League adjusted its projection and estimated a 2027 COLA of approximately 3.5%. The figure remains a projection rather than an official increase, meaning the final adjustment has not yet been established.
A 3.5% COLA would be higher than the 2.8% adjustment applied in 2026. However, the comparison does not mean beneficiaries are guaranteed to receive a 3.5% increase next year. The September inflation figure still needs to be included in the calculation.
That distinction is important because the projected figure can change before the adjustment is officially determined.
Social Security COLA Awaits September Data
The final adjustment uses CPI-W data from the third quarter, covering July, August and September. The September CPI report is scheduled for 14 October, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics calendar cited in the MundoNOW report. The release will complete the third-quarter figures needed for the 2027 adjustment.
The source provides an example of how a 3.5% COLA could affect a monthly benefit. If the adjustment ultimately reaches 3.5%, a $2,000 (£1,496) monthly benefit would increase by around $70 (£52), bringing it to approximately $2,070 (£1,548). That is an illustration based on the projected rate, not a guaranteed payment amount for an individual beneficiary.
Once the 2027 COLA is officially established, the new adjustment will apply to December benefits, which Social Security recipients will begin receiving in January 2027. Until the September inflation data are available, the 3.5% figure remains an estimate rather than the final Social Security COLA.
