'JD Vance Is a Dirtbag': Maine Senate Candidate Explodes Over Vice-President's ICE Remarks

Maine Democratic Senate nominee Troy Jackson has unleashed a furious verbal assault on JD Vance, branding the Vice-President a 'dirtbag' following remarks dismissing the fatal immigration enforcement shooting of a young Colombian man in Biddeford.

The explosive political clash erupted after Vance visited Brewer, Maine, urging critics to look beyond the 13 July killing of 25-year-old Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero and instead focus on broader border security and fentanyl overdoses.

Jackson fired back in a viral social media video, demanding that Vance show some basic perspective regarding a tragic human life cut short by a federal agent.

'JD Vance is a dirtbag,' Jackson said in a video posted to social media. 'There's a young man that had a Social Security number, he had a job. I mean, he had a life, he had a family.'

The high-stakes confrontation has thrust immigration enforcement back to the centre of Maine's fiercely contested Senate race, where Jackson is challenging incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins.

With family attorneys disputing official federal narratives and active investigations underway by the Maine Attorney General's Office, the widening controversy continues to draw intense national scrutiny over accountability and the aggressive tactics deployed by federal immigration authorities.

JD Vance Demands 'Perspective'

Speaking in Brewer on Monday, Vance said the Trump administration was investigating the shooting, but quickly shifted the focus to fentanyl deaths in Maine.

He argued that Democrats were 'far more worried about a shooting involving an illegal alien' than about what he described as tens of thousands of Mainers dying from fentanyl overdoses.

'Have a little bit of perspective,' Vance said, adding that the administration could investigate shootings while also securing the border and fighting the flow of fentanyl. That comparison became the flashpoint.

Jackson hit back that Vance should 'have some damn perspective of his own', before adding, 'you don't even know what the hell's going on.' He also described ICE as a 'rogue agency' and accused Vance of not giving a 's---' about Durán Guerrero.

A Young Father at the Centre

The human story behind the political clash is impossible to miss. Durán Guerrero was 25, from Colombia, and lived in Biddeford with his partner, Karolina Rojas Alvarez, and their three-year-old daughter. His family's attorney, Benjamin Gideon, has said Durán Guerrero had a federal work permit and was complying with immigration proceedings.

ICE has confirmed that Durán Guerrero was not the target of the operation. Federal officials have said agents were conducting an enforcement action in the area and that Durán Guerrero allegedly drove away when officers approached. Vance said officers believed he posed a danger to the community. But the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

Family Lawyer Challenges Vance

Gideon has now sharply challenged Vance's characterisation of the case. He called the vice president's suggestion that Durán Guerrero's death could be viewed in the context of the fentanyl trade 'completely disingenuous and purposefully misleading', saying there was no indication that Durán Guerrero or those targeted by the ICE operation were connected to drug trafficking.

Gideon has also questioned Vance's claim that the federal government is investigating the shooting. Vance said that the Trump administration and the Justice Department are investigating such incidents. Yet Gideon said neither he nor the family had been contacted by federal investigators about the shooting. The family has, however, been cooperating with investigators from the Maine Attorney General's Office.

Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey confirmed that his office is actively investigating Durán Guerrero's death and said it has been collecting and analysing evidence with relevant agencies.

Democrats Turn up the Heat

Jackson is not the only Maine Democrat to condemn Vance. US Representative Chellie Pingree also criticised his comments, while Democrats have pressed the federal government for answers about the shooting.

A group of Democratic lawmakers recently held a hearing in Biddeford focused on the death and the broader use of force by federal immigration officers.

Republican Senator Susan Collins and independent Senator Angus King have also called for an independent investigation, adding bipartisan pressure to scrutinise what happened.

For Jackson, however, the dispute is becoming something more personal. He is challenging Collins in a Senate race where immigration enforcement has already emerged as a major political fault line.

The Questions That Remain
