Venezuela vs. Chile Women's Football Match Ends in Chaos During 2026 South American Games Final

Venezuela's women's Under-20 football team secured gold at the 2026 South American Games after a dramatic final against Chile descended into a post-match confrontation between the two teams.

The final was played at the Asociación Rosarina de Fútbol in Rosario, Argentina, on 23 September. Venezuela eventually prevailed on penalties after the match finished 1-1 following 90 minutes. The official Santa Fe 2026 tournament website recorded the shootout as a 4-3 victory, while Venezuela's Olympic committee reported a 4-2 scoreline.

Chile had appeared on course to claim the gold medal after taking the lead shortly after half-time. Antonella Martínez opened the scoring in the 49th minute after receiving an assist from Vaitiare Pardo.

The goal came after a goalless first half in which Chile created several opportunities. The Chilean side continued to hold its advantage as the match approached full time.

However, Venezuela found a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time. A handball inside the Chilean penalty area resulted in a penalty, with Karla Alfonzo stepping up to convert and make it 1-1.

Valeria Rebanales Becomes Venezuela's Hero

The late equaliser sent the gold-medal contest into a penalty shootout, where Venezuela's goalkeeper and captain Valeria Rebanales played a decisive role.

Rebanales saved penalties from Martínez and Pardo, helping Venezuela complete the comeback. She also converted her own spot-kick during the shootout, adding to her contribution on a remarkable afternoon.

The victory also gave Venezuela back-to-back women's football gold medals at the South American Games. The team had previously won the title at the 2022 Games in Asunción, defeating Uruguay in a penalty shootout.

There was an additional twist to Venezuela's campaign. Chile had defeated them 3-0 during the group stage before the two sides met again for the gold medal. Venezuela later defeated Uruguay 1-0 in the semi-final to reach the final.

Chile were left with silver, while Uruguay claimed bronze after defeating Paraguay in the third-place play-off. But the result was quickly overshadowed by events after the final whistle.

Celebrations Give Way to an On-Field Brawl

Tensions boiled over as the Venezuelan players celebrated their victory. Reports from Chilean media said players from both teams became involved in a confrontation, with pushing, shouting and physical exchanges breaking out on the pitch.

Members of the coaching staffs intervened as the situation escalated and attempted to separate the players. Chilean outlet Cooperativa reported that members of the Chilean coaching staff had to calm their players during the incident.

The broadcast of the match described the confrontation as 'lamentable' and said such incidents should not be normalised, while acknowledging the frustration that followed Chile's defeat.

Santa Fe Diario reported that the confrontation lasted for a little over a minute and involved pushing and verbal exchanges before members of both coaching staffs helped restore order. It also reported that no official statements had been issued by the delegations about the incident at the time of publication.

For Venezuela, the evening ultimately ended with another South American Games title. For Chile, the dramatic late equaliser and penalty defeat were followed by an unwanted scene that overshadowed an otherwise fiercely contested final.
