'The Walking Dead: Dead City' Season 4 Has a 'Good Shot' but AMC Still Hasn't Renewed It

'The Walking Dead: Dead City' has become the best-reviewed series in its franchise yet, with Season 3 scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and now the show has a 'good shot' at a fourth season according to its chief creative overseer.

However, despite its strong performance, AMC has still not officially renewed the spin-off, leaving the future of Maggie Rhee and Negan's story undecided.

Scott Gimple's latest comments suggest there is real potential for 'Dead City' to continue, but they fall short of confirming that Season 4 is happening. Speaking recently, he stressed that renewal decisions are more complex in today's streaming-led television landscape, even for shows that appear to be performing well.

Scott Gimple Says Season 4 Has a 'Good Shot'

During a recent appearance at MultiCon 2026, Gimple was asked whether 'Dead City' could end with its third season or continue into a fourth. Rather than confirming the show's future, he urged fans to remain hopeful.

'I would hope for everyone to hold out hope, because it's performing well in the numbers, and people are digging it,' Gimple said. 'So, I think it's got a good shot at it, but it is a different time.'

The comments are notable because Gimple oversees the wider 'Walking Dead' universe. His assessment suggests that the show's performance and audience response are working in its favour, even though AMC has not yet made the final decision.

Season 3 has also been a strong critical performer. It currently holds the highest Rotten Tomatoes critics' score of the three seasons, at 100%, compared with 80% for Season 1 and 56% for Season 2.

Why AMC Has Not Renewed 'Dead City' Yet

Gimple explained that the television business has changed significantly since he was running the original 'The Walking Dead'. During that era, traditional ratings could provide a relatively clear indication of how long a successful series might continue.

That calculation is considerably more difficult now. According to Gimple, modern streaming economics mean that the metrics are no longer as clear-cut, making it harder to predict when a show will receive another season. He therefore would not put a definitive timeline on AMC's decision.

The network has previously renewed 'Dead City' relatively close to the end of its seasons. Season 2 was announced shortly before Season 1 concluded, while Season 3 was announced about a month after the second season finished.

Season 3 Leaves the Door Open

The potential for another season is also supported by where the story has gone. The third season continued following Maggie and Negan as they attempted to establish a functioning community in post-apocalyptic Manhattan.

Their complicated relationship remained central to the story, while the season introduced new threats and expanded the show's world.

The Season 3 finale also opened the possibility of taking the story beyond Manhattan and into other parts of New York. That gives the writers a clear avenue for continuing Maggie and Negan's story should AMC give the green light. For now, however, there is no confirmed Season 4 storyline, episode count or release date.

The 'Walking Dead' Universe Will Continue

Even if 'Dead City' does not return, Gimple made clear that the wider 'Walking Dead' franchise is not coming to an end. He said the 'greater story' of 'The Walking Dead' will continue, although the franchise's future rollout is expected to be slower.

Rather than producing new spin-offs with the same urgency as in previous years, AMC and the creative team appear to be taking a more measured approach.

The next confirmed project is 'The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon' Season 4, which is expected to debut in 2027 and will serve as the final season of Norman Reedus' European-set spin-off.

For 'Dead City' fans, the situation remains one of cautious optimism. Gimple's 'good shot' comment indicates that the show is in a relatively strong position, particularly following a critically successful third season, but it is not a renewal announcement. Until AMC makes its decision, Maggie and Negan's future remains officially uncertain.
