Annie Andrews launched a blistering attack on Republican Senator Darline Graham during a fiery South Carolina Senate debate, branding her rival "unserious and unqualified" as the candidates clashed over national security, the Iran war, and Graham's readiness for a full term.

Andrews delivered her sharpest blow by comparing Graham's earlier national security admission to a surgeon who admits an operation is not their specialty.

'If your surgeon said that appendectomies aren't really his thing, would you still hand him a scalpel? No,' Andrews asked. 'So why would we hand Darline Graham a full term in the US Senate?

Graham fired back, accusing Andrews of dishonesty and defending her willingness to acknowledge gaps in her knowledge.

'At least I'm honest,' she retorted.

Andrews Revives Graham's National Security Admission

The clash unfolded on Sunday, 11 October, in Columbia, South Carolina, during the only scheduled general-election debate between the candidates. Libertarian Kasie Whitener also participated.

Andrews seized on Graham's performance during an earlier Republican primary debate, when she struggled to answer a question about US security interests in Taiwan and the South China Sea.

'National security is not my thing,' Graham admitted, giving Andrews a potent line of attack.

The Democrat argued that voters should expect more from someone seeking a six-year Senate term. Graham countered that admitting a knowledge gap was preferable to pretending otherwise.

Iran War Fuels Another Clash

Andrews accused Graham of voting three times to continue the war in Iran, questioning her foreign-policy judgment.

Graham attacked Andrews's credibility and defended the Trump administration's approach, arguing that Democrats had increased the risk of Tehran developing a nuclear weapon.

The exchange highlighted their competing arguments: Andrews questioned Graham's preparedness, while Graham defended her record and the administration's strategy.

AI Debate Sparks Qualifications Fight

The argument extended to artificial intelligence and proposed safeguards. After Graham praised President Donald Trump's creation of an AI task force, Andrews questioned whether the senator was ready for a full term.

Graham responded: 'I'm just as qualified as you.'

Graham was appointed to the Senate after her brother, Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, died in July 2026. She subsequently won the Republican nomination with Trump's endorsement.

Before her appointment, she had not held elected office. Andrews, a paediatrician and political newcomer, has made Graham's lack of prior experience a central campaign issue.

Andrews Questions Graham's Loyalty to Trump

Graham repeatedly praised Trump, while Andrews accused her of being too closely aligned with the White House.

'She seems to believe the job she has right now is to be the White House's ambassador to South Carolina,' Andrews said.

Andrews has sought to appeal to independents and dissatisfied Republicans, backing a public healthcare option rather than Medicare-for-all. Graham, meanwhile, portrayed her opponent as a radical liberal whose policies would not suit South Carolina voters.

Personal Clash Over Graham's Name

The debate turned personal when Andrews questioned Graham's use of her family name, noting that she had sometimes used her husband's surname, Nordone, on social media.

Graham insisted her legal name had always been Graham and said keeping it helped her maintain a connection to her parents, who died when she was young.

She described the reference as raising a 'horrible, tragic memory' and accused Andrews of making a personal attack.

Husband's China Business Links Draw Scrutiny

Andrews also challenged Graham over her husband's employment at companies connected to Chinese manufacturing.

The Washington Post reported that Larry Nordone holds customer service director roles at Cosmox North America and Birchwood Trading, both of which source products from China. The report also raised questions about financial disclosures, including Cosmox's omission from Graham's disclosure of her husband's income sources.

Graham argued that her husband was an employee rather than an owner.

'They buy toy guns from China, she said.

The reporting does not establish that Graham personally profited improperly from the companies' activities.

A Senate Race Under Pressure

The debate comes as Republicans defend a Senate seat in a state Trump carried by nearly 18 percentage points in 2024.

The Cook Political Report downgraded its assessment from 'Solid Republican' to 'Likely Republican' in September, while the Senate Leadership Fund announced a $5 million (£3,7 million) investment in the race.

Neither development means Graham is expected to lose, but both underscore the contest's growing profile. Early voting begins on 19 October, leaving both campaigns limited time to turn debate performances into electoral momentum.

Andrews has made Graham's national security admission the centrepiece of her challenge. Graham insists that honesty is a strength, not a weakness. South Carolina voters must decide which argument carries more weight.
