Android 7.1 Nougat
Android Nougat expected to be released in August Google

Google's next Android iteration version 7.0 codenamed Nougat would be released as early as next month, according to Twitter leakstar Evan Blass aka evleaks. The update will incorporate 5 August security patch.

The early rollout hints Google might have scheduled a new time frame for its upcoming Android version. Instead of its I/O annual developer conference, which Google traditionally chooses to unveil the new Android version, the internet giant surprised everyone by announcing the developer preview of Android N in March, which was way ahead of the developer conference that was scheduled for 18 May.

The final developer preview of Android Nougat was out in the middle of this month, which Google is calling the last milestone of this preview series. The release provides the developer with the near-final system updates for all supported preview devices, to help them build their apps for the final rollout, which according to Google will happen later this summer, although there is no word on the exact date of the release.

Android Nougat will be available for all compatible Nexus devices, but above Nexus 5, asserts evleaks. This would not be surprising as the LG- manufactured Nexus model is almost three years old, and Google stops support for Android updates and security patches to devices after a certain period.

According to Google, a Nexus device is eligible of getting Android version updates for at least two years from when the device becomes available on the Play Store. Security patches will be available for longer of three years from the availability of the device or 18 months from when the Google Play Store last sold the phone.

New Android version means new Nexus hardware. Google usually releases an Android version alongside the latest Nexus devices. There have been several reports suggesting HTC is working on two Nexus-branded smartphones codenamed Marlin and Sailfish. HTC Marlin is said to be the bigger model with 5.5in screen whereas Sailfish is expected with a 5in screen.
