Google releases Android 4.2 Jelly Bean update for Nexus 7. Google

Google has followed the roll-out of Android 4.2 to the Galaxy Nexus I9250 with an Over The Air (OTA) update for the Nexus 7, offering the same build number JOP40C. This new version of the Jelly Bean operating system brings a number of new features, including Gesture Typing and Photo Sphere. Nexus 7 users can download the official software either via OTA or through a notification on their devices.

However, for manual installation, follow this guide. This guide contains instructions for both rooted and non-rooted Nexus 7 units. Remember this guide is meant only for the Nexus 7 and since this is not a full firmware update, your device must have Android 4.1.2 JZO54K installed, in addition to meeting below requirements. Pre-Requisites

  • Download USB drivers and enable USB debugging mode
  • Ensure battery carries at least 80 percent charge
  • Create back-up of data before proceeding with tutorial
  • Ensure device is factory unlocked
  • Ensure Android 4.1.1 JRO03D (previous official build) which is not rooted and also has stock recovery
  • Do not proceed if Android 4.1.2 JZO54K is not installed

To Install Android 4.2 JOP40C OTA Update on Nexus 7 [Non-Rooted]

  • Download Android 4.2 (file name - 03a4eaf95f73.signed-nakasi-JOP40C-from-JRO03D.03a4eaf9.zip)
  • Connect device to computer using USB cable and copy downloaded file to SD card on device
  • Switch tablet off and re-start in bootloader mode by pressing Volume Up and Power until Fastboot menu appears with Start on top
  • Follow on-screen instructions and press Volume up until Recovery appears and then press Power to select
  • An exclamation mark will now appear. Press Volume Up and Power together and Recovery Mode menu will now appear
  • Select Update from SD Card and then use Power to select downloaded file and confirm installation
  • After installation, device will re-boot (this may take up to five minutes)

The Android 4.2 JOP40C (Jelly Bean) OTA software update is now installed on the Google Nexus 7. You can verify software version by browsing to Settings > About Tablet.

Pre-Requisites

  • Ensure Nexus 7 is rooted and install custom recovery (to do so, check this guide). Ensure CWM Recovery is installed
  • Do not proceed if Android 4.1.2 JZO54K is not installed
  • Make a Nandroid backup of previous set-up

To Install Android 4.2 JOP40C OTA Update on Nexus 7 [Rooted]

  • Download Android 4.2 JOP40C OTA update
  • Connect device to computer using USB cable and copy file to SD card
  • Switch off device and re-start in bootloader mode (to do so, switch device on while pressing Volume Up and Power buttons until Fastboot menu appears with Start on top)
  • Follow on-screen instructions and press Volume up until Recovery appears and then press Power to select
  • In CWM Recovery, scroll to Flash Zip from SD Card and press Power to select. Then press Power again and select Choose Zip from SD Card
  • Note: You may have to turn off signature verification from Toggle Signature Verification option
  • Browse to Android 4.2 zip file using Volume keys and press Power button to select and confirm installation
  • After installation, return to main Recovery menu and select Reboot System Now (this may take up to five minutes)

The Nexus 7 is now running Android 4.2 JOP40C Jelly Bean.
