Anthony Mackie will not finish his work on Avengers: Secret Wars until after his Broadway run as Macbeth ends in July 2027, putting one of Marvel's biggest stars on a collision course with the studio's already-tight timetable for its next Avengers epic.

The actor has confirmed that he will return to complete his Secret Wars work once his Shakespearean commitment is over, potentially leaving Marvel with only months to finish the enormous production before its scheduled December 2027 cinema release.

Mackie's comments do not mean Marvel has officially delayed the entire film because of his Broadway role. However, they provide a revealing glimpse of how late some of the Captain America star's work on the sixth Avengers film could continue into 2027.

Mackie Chooses Shakespeare First

Before returning to the Marvel universe, Mackie will take on one of theatre's most demanding roles when he plays Macbeth in a new Broadway production of Shakespeare's tragedy.

The production will begin rehearsals in February 2027, with Mackie expected to remain committed to the show until July. It will mark his return to Broadway after 16 years away from the stage, making the project a significant moment in his career as well as a scheduling commitment.

Mackie has spoken enthusiastically about the opportunity, describing Macbeth as one of the great roles actors dream of playing. He also acknowledged the physical challenge of performing the tragedy on stage, where actors can typically perform as many as eight shows a week.

Secret Wars Faces A Race Against Time

'Once I finish on Broadway, I'll go to finish up all the Avengers stuff for Secret Wars,' Mackie said, confirming that his Captain America work on the film will continue after his theatrical run.

The timing is significant. Avengers: Secret Wars is currently scheduled to reach cinemas on 17 December 2027, meaning Mackie's return in July would come roughly five months before the planned release.

Unconfirmed reports have also suggested that principal photography has been pushed towards January 2027, rather than beginning earlier. If that timeline holds, Marvel would be working on a blockbuster of enormous scale while its release date rapidly approaches.

That does not necessarily mean Secret Wars is in trouble. Marvel could have planned additional photography for later in the production process, while a later shoot could also allow filmmakers to incorporate developments from Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives in December 2026.

Captain America's Crucial Role

Mackie's Sam Wilson has become one of the MCU's central heroes since taking over the Captain America mantle, following his transformation from Falcon into Steve Rogers' successor.

He is expected to feature in both upcoming Avengers films, with Doomsday scheduled for 18 December 2026 before Secret Wars arrives the following year. That makes the actor's schedule particularly important as Marvel prepares what is expected to be one of the biggest ensemble films in its history.

Can Marvel Beat The Clock?

For now, there is no official indication that Secret Wars will miss its December 2027 release date. Marvel has not announced another postponement, despite growing speculation about the production timetable.

Mackie's revelation nevertheless highlights the extraordinary schedule facing the studio. His Broadway run will keep Captain America occupied until July, while the film itself still needs to complete its remaining photography and the extensive post-production process required for a visual-effects-heavy Avengers blockbuster.

For Marvel, the question is no longer simply when its heroes will assemble. It is whether the studio can assemble the finished film quickly enough.
