The series will go back to the era of King Edward I and tell the tale of his loyal knight Wilkin Brattle (played by Australian actor Lee Jones) who decides to start a normal life with his wife and child after being ravaged and broken by war and bloodshed.

But fate has other things planned for him as he will be forced to choose the bloodiest sword of all and become an executioner. The series is expected to feature plenty of graphic beheadings and limb chopping. The SOA creator, however, justifies the gory killings by saying "It was a highly rebellious period, a very dangerous period.

"Violence, it is definitely a part of their life," he told The Rolling Stone. The historical drama is touted as another wild FX ride for the action scenes and the unpredictability it brings. Many critics, who have watched the pilot episode, are comparing the drama with HBO's Game Of Thrones.

The series cast includes Katey Sagal as Annora of the Alders, Suter himself as Annora's faceless protector, Stephan Moyer as Milus Corbett, Flora Spencer-Longhurst as Baroness Lowry and Timothy V Murphy as Father Ruskin. The Bastard Executioner will premiere on 15 September on FX network.
