'Not a True Fan': Dexter Fans Reject Copycat Killer Following Tragic Airbnb Murder in UK
Benjamin Day pleaded guilty to murdering Maria Saceanu after allegedly recreating a Dexter-inspired 'kill room', sparking social media backlash

A brutal real-life murder inspired by the fictional TV show Dexter has sparked outrage online, but not in the way the killer may have expected. After a British forensics student pleaded guilty to murder after building a 'kill room' inspired by the hit TV series, fans condemned him as a fake fan who completely missed the point of the show.
According to a report from West Midlands Police, 20-year-old forensic science student Benjamin Day admitted to the murder of 24-year-old Maria Saceanu at Wolverhampton Crown Court. Day had lured Saceanu to a rented Airbnb room on Bancroft Road in Tividale, Sandwell, which he had meticulously lined with plastic sheeting attached to the walls and floor using a staple gun.
Day stabbed the victim 78 times before attempting to dismember her body. He was arrested after flagging down police with a severe hand injury, falsely claiming an animal had bitten him. Detective Inspector Matt Marston said Day had an 'obsessive' fixation on the character Dexter Morgan and meticulously planned the attack.
Viral Backlash Across Social Media
When news of the gruesome crime reached social media, a video posted by BBC News quickly went viral on TikTok, gathering over 7.8 million views and more than 500,000 likes.
Rather than simply discussing the details of the court trial, thousands of viewers took to the comment section to call out Day's twisted logic, firmly distancing the TV series and its fanbase from his actions.
Fans pointed out the glaring flaw in Day's obsession: the fictional character Dexter Morgan strictly operates under the 'Code of Harry', a rigid moral rule set that dictates he only targets unpunished murderers who have taken innocent lives.
By luring an innocent woman to her death, fans argued that Day completely failed to grasp the core theme of the show he claimed to idolise.
'Dexter Only Kills Murderers'
The comment section under the viral BBC News video quickly turned into a unified rejection of the killer, with top-liked comments highlighting his complete misunderstanding of the show's code.
One top comment with over 101,000 likes from user Finley simply stated, 'he didn't follow the code.'
Addressing Day's claim of being a follower of the show, user Lisa Rose wrote, 'Then he's not a true fan, cause Dexter only kills murderers.' Similarly, user ghyser gained over 43,000 likes asking, 'How can you be a fan of a show and then break the main rule of the show?'
Other users emphasised that the fictional protagonist would despise the copycat's actions, with user MayaS_21 writing that 'Dexter would hateee this guy.' Viewers also mocked his attempt to copy the character's look, with user Corey Maple sharing an image of the lead character's signature outfit and noting, 'he's even got the shirt.'
A Tragic Loss Beyond the Fiction
While online debates centred heavily around the misinterpretation of the TV drama, several commentators reminded the public of the real human tragedy at the heart of the case.
User mrs_frank urged viewers to keep the focus on the victim, writing, 'Nobody even going to recognise that a young woman lost her life?? Rest in peace, show some respect, all banging on about a code.'
Day, who initially denied the charges before changing his plea part-way through his trial, remains in custody. He is scheduled to be sentenced at Wolverhampton Crown Court on 4 December.
