Teenager Discovered Alive Inside Coffin At Own Wake After Father Checked Pulse And Declared Her Dead
Yuleidy Ixcotoyac's family said she was believed to have died after collapsing on the way to a medical centre, but no clinical confirmation was documented

A 15-year-old girl in Guatemala reportedly woke up inside her coffin during her wake on Saturday, 10 October, after her father believed she had died.
Yuleidy Ixcotoyac was being mourned at her family home in El Jocote, Sacapulas, in the country's Quiché Department, when relatives noticed movement inside the coffin.
Her father, Abraham Ixcotoyac, said his daughter lost consciousness while he was driving her towards a medical centre. He stopped the vehicle after believing she had stopped breathing and that he could no longer detect her pulse. According to his account, he concluded that she had died.
Abraham, an evangelical pastor, described the experience in an interview with local broadcaster TV SAC. He said he had pulled over to check his daughter after noticing her condition had deteriorated.
'I saw that she was no longer breathing and I couldn't feel her pulse on her wrists. It was a very difficult situation for me,' he said, according to the account provided in the original article.
The father also said his daughter never reached the hospital. The family subsequently obtained a coffin and returned home, believing she had died.
According to an interview with TV SAC, reported by Guatemalan newspaper Prensa Libre on Sunday, 11 October, Abraham said he had not taken his daughter into hospital. The report also carried accounts from Yuleidy and her mother about what happened during the wake.
No medical examination confirming the teenager's death was documented in the reports reviewed. Her father's account therefore establishes what he believed had happened, rather than confirming that she had clinically died.
Mother Sees Movement in Coffin
Relatives and other mourners had gathered at the family home by the afternoon. According to the family's account, Yuleidy's mother, Lesvia Ríos, was crying beside the coffin when she noticed movement.
'When I was crying on top of her casket, we opened the window and she was moving, she was waking up and suddenly she sat up,' Ríos said, according to the original article.
The teenager reportedly opened her eyes and began moving inside the coffin. Relatives then helped her out and offered her water, according to accounts of the incident. Video footage of the moment was subsequently circulated online.
People who had arrived to mourn the teenager were suddenly confronted with the sight of her moving and regaining consciousness.
Her parents have described the experience in religious terms. Their interpretation reflects their personal beliefs, but the available reports do not establish a medical explanation for what happened.
The incident also raises a question about how the family came to believe the teenager had died. According to her father, he could not detect breathing or a pulse when he stopped the car. However, no documented clinical assessment confirming death was included in the reports reviewed.
Girl Tells of Chest Pain Before Collapse
Yuleidy later spoke about the symptoms she experienced before collapsing. She said she had felt intense pain and a heavy sensation in her chest before losing consciousness.
'It started hurting really badly, I felt it was heavy, and then I blacked out, like I fainted,' she said, according to the translated account in the original article.
The teenager also expressed gratitude to God for what she described as a miracle. Her parents have similarly spoken about their faith following the incident.
Published accounts reported that Yuleidy was conscious and recovering after the episode. However, the reports reviewed did not include a detailed medical assessment confirming her condition or explaining the cause of her collapse.
There is also no publicly documented medical evidence in those reports establishing how long she remained unconscious. The interval between her collapse and the moment she began moving inside the coffin has been described as several hours, although the precise duration has not been independently established.
The distinction matters because the family's initial belief that Yuleidy had died was not supported by a documented medical examination. Her subsequent recovery of consciousness does not, by itself, establish that clinical death occurred.
The episode attracted online attention because of the circumstances described by the family and the footage reportedly showing the teenager moving inside the coffin. However, the video and personal accounts cannot establish the medical cause of the incident.
Yuleidy's parents regard her recovery as a miracle. Without a publicly available medical assessment, though, the circumstances surrounding her collapse and apparent recovery remain unexplained.
