Tom Hanks has paid an emotional tribute to his mother on social media following her death aged 84. The Oscar winning actor shared a black-and-white photo of his mother Janet Marylyn Frager on Instagram

Paying tribute to his mother who was a former hospital worker he wrote: "This beauty? My mom. She was the difference in many lives. Many lives. We say goodbye to her today. Safe crossing."

The 60-year-old star posted another photo on Twitter of the State Theatre in Red Bluff, California writing: "Saw many movies here with our Mom. Thanks for all who came to see her off. Hanx."

Hanks' wife, actress Rita Wilson, also remembered her mother-in-law sharing a picture of on Instagram, Wilson wrote: "This wonderful lady gave birth to my husband, and three other children. Thank you for bringing my love into the world. She is at peace now."

Appearing on Desert Island Discs in May Hanks broke down as he recalled his childhood and the pain of his parents divorce when he was just a young boy. The actor and his siblings Larry and Sarah lived with his father Amos following his parents' divorce, while their younger brother Jim stayed with their mother. Amos Hanks died in 1992.
