Joe Manganiello Says Sofía Vergara Refused To Hug Him Even When He Begged During Health Crisis
Manganiello alleges his pleas for affection went unanswered during seven-year illness

Joe Manganiello claims Sofía Vergara refused to hug him even when he begged for affection during the prolonged health crisis that overlapped with their marriage.
The allegation emerged in coverage of his forthcoming memoir, Bloodlines, on 7 October. According to Us Weekly's account of the book revelations, Manganiello describes their relationship becoming emotionally distant while he struggled with his health. His claims concern private interactions and have not been independently established.
The True Blood and Magic Mike actor's account adds another perspective to the former couple's publicly differing explanations of their split. It also includes an acknowledgement of Vergara's role during a critical hospital admission.
A Marriage Under Strain
Manganiello, 49, reportedly describes the marriage as having 'become devoid of any emotionality whatsoever.' He also alleges that Vergara ridiculed him over Bubbles, the Chihuahua he adopted in 2019.
Us Weekly reported on 7 October that Vergara had not publicly addressed the allegations and that it had approached her for comment. No direct response to these specific claims was identified in the reporting reviewed for this article. Her earlier comments about their divorce predate these revelations.
The distinction matters because the memoir presents Manganiello's recollections of their relationship. It does not establish Vergara's account of the same conversations or experiences.
The Hospital Decision He Says Saved His Life
His description of emotional distance sits alongside an account of Vergara supporting him during his 2016 hospitalisation.
In a memoir excerpt covered by Entertainment Weekly, Manganiello recalls her sleeping on a cot in his hospital room. He says that, while he was under anaesthesia, doctors contacted her and she authorised the removal of his large intestine.
He describes that decision as lifesaving. The operation left him with an ostomy bag and fears about how his life would change. These details form part of his own account of the medical emergency.
Two Different Explanations for Their Split
Manganiello filed for divorce in July 2023, citing irreconcilable differences, according to court documents. In January 2024, Vergara told El País that their disagreement about having children had contributed to the end of their marriage. She explained that she did not want to become a mother again at that stage of her life.
Manganiello challenged that explanation in a July 2024 Men's Journal interview. He said they had tried to start a family during the first year and a half together, but denied that parenthood was ultimately why they separated.
He said he had promised not to leave if their attempts were unsuccessful, describing the relationship's breakdown instead as two people who 'grew apart.' That disagreement was already public before the latest memoir claims.
What 'Bloodlines' Covers
Simon & Schuster lists Bloodlines for release on 13 October 2026. Its description outlines a seven-year health ordeal involving chronic pain, medical crises and an operation to remove an organ.
The publisher also describes Manganiello's exploration of his Armenian ancestry, family history and spirituality during his search for answers. Those themes place the marriage revelations within a broader account of illness and identity.
The book's central contrast is between Manganiello's public image, built partly on physically demanding screen roles, and the serious health difficulties he says he experienced privately.
