A sombre image bearing the dates '1964–2026' has sent fans searching for answers about Keanu Reeves, reviving a familiar celebrity death-hoax tactic just as the John Wick star reached a major birthday milestone.

The viral graphic falsely suggests that Reeves has died, using an obituary-style format that can make the claim appear credible when shared without context. However, there is no credible report confirming that the actor has died.

The timing has added to the confusion. Reeves turned 62 on Wednesday, 2 September, with UPI publishing a 25-image birthday retrospective and the Associated Press also listing him in its celebrity birthday roundup.

Why the Keanu Reeves Death Hoax Spread

The latest rumour appears to follow a familiar pattern in celebrity death hoaxes, where a dramatic image, tribute post or sensational headline is shared without confirmation from a representative, family member or reputable news organisation.

The viral image uses Reeves' birth and current year in the format commonly associated with memorial tributes, making it easy to mistake for an obituary announcement.

The stark date range can further reinforce that impression, particularly when the graphic is shared without its original context.

Social-media algorithms can also amplify such claims when users react to them, even if those reactions are driven by shock or disbelief.

A post does not necessarily need to be accurate to generate substantial engagement, and celebrity names can make false claims travel especially quickly.

Reeves has been targeted by similar rumours before. In 2012, Global News reported that rumours of the actor's death had begun trending on Twitter, but said the claims were untrue.

Fans React to the Keanu Reeves Death Hoax

The graphic left some fans genuinely alarmed, with several admitting they initially believed the actor had died.

'STOP doing that!! I thought he was dead,' one person wrote, while another said, 'That year almost looks like he's late honestly.'

Others expressed similar frustration at the misleading imagery. 'Don't scare me like that I thought he died for a sec,' one fan commented, while another wrote, 'Stop it! You made me think Reeves passed away.'

Some fans even called for the imagery to be changed, with one person writing, 'Please for the love of all things Reeves put a balloon in the photo or something.'

Another fan summed up the reaction bluntly: 'Another heart stopper I was about to flip everything.'

Despite the alarm caused by the post, the comments also made clear that fans were relieved to discover that the actor was alive and celebrating his birthday.

Keanu Reeves Turns 62

Reeves was born on 2 September 1964 in Beirut, Lebanon, and was raised in Toronto, Canada. He rose to Hollywood prominence through films such as Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, Point Break, Speed and The Matrix.

His career reached another defining stage when he took on the role of assassin John Wick in the action franchise. The character became one of Reeves' most recognisable roles and helped establish a new chapter in his career as an action star.

Away from acting, Reeves remains active as a musician. He is the bassist and backing vocalist of rock band Dogstar.

His 62nd birthday has arrived while he continues professional work. There is no credible evidence that Reeves has died, and the viral '1964–2026' graphic should be treated as part of the latest round of online rumours, rather than a genuine death announcement.
