Konami has revealed at Gamescom 2016 the next entry in the Metal Gear franchise - Metal Gear Survive. The four player co-op stealth game for Xbox One, PS4 and PC is due for release in 2017.

Set between the events of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, Survive returns to XOF's attack on the first Mother Base. In the game's debut trailer (embedded below), we see surviving members of the Militaires Sans Frontières forces sucked into a wormhole and transported into an "alternate universe" where zombies (yes, zombies) have taken over.

A press release described the game as a co-op stealth game that "takes a divergent look at familiar Metal Gear themes and pursues a fresh spirit of exploration in unique gameplay."

It continues: "Metal Gear Survive continues the pedigree of Metal Gear Solid 5's highly praised gameplay design, with a unique blend of stealth and co-op play mechanics.

"Players can strategically manage massive threats with the help of four-player online cooperative play. New weaponry will also be introduced to combat charging creatures and lethal environments as well."

Aside from the unique new setting for the venerable series, Metal Gear Survive is notable for being the first game in the classic franchise following the publisher's public fallout with franchise creator Hideo Kojima.

With Kojima now hard at work on the PS4-exclusive Death Stranding, it is currently unclear if the now-independent Kojima Productions has had anything to do with the creation or development of Survive.
