Nancy Guthrie

Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of 'Today' host Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her Tucson home on 31 January 2026, and nearly eight months later, the FBI is offering up to $100,000 (£75,000) for information, yet no body, suspect, or confirmed death has emerged.

The question haunting the case is simple. Is Nancy Guthrie alive? Investigators cannot answer it. A ransom note sent days after she disappeared claimed she died shortly after being taken, but authorities have never confirmed her death and continue to treat the case as an active kidnapping for ransom investigation while pursuing new leads in the case.

What the Ransom Note Claimed

The note, sent to local CBS affiliate KOLD-TV on 6 February 2026 and addressed to the Guthrie family, said Nancy died soon after her abduction, apparently from a heart problem. 'We did not fully grasp the seriousness of her physical condition. We never intended to hurt her, that was not our intention. She perished shortly after she was taken,' it stated, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department, which released the full text. The writers claimed she was 'buried in nature now' and apologised to her family.

The FBI has said the two early ransom notes were likely legitimate, while other messages have been treated as possible extortion attempts or remain under investigation. Investigators asked the public to study the writer's distinctive phrasing, including unusual word choices and linguistic characteristics that could help identify the writer.

No Suspect After Thousands of Tips

Despite surveillance footage, DNA testing, and thousands of tips, no suspect has been publicly identified and no arrest has been made in Nancy's disappearance. The FBI released doorbell camera footage showing a masked, gloved, and armed individual disconnecting the camera at her front door in the early hours of 1 February 2026. Blood found on her porch was confirmed to be hers.

The only arrest tied to the case involved Derrick Callella, 42, of Hawthorne, California, who pleaded guilty in federal court to two felony counts of harassment using a telecommunications device and was later sentenced to concurrent five-year probation terms after posing as a kidnapper and contacting the family about a Bitcoin payment. He had no actual connection to the abduction.

Why the Reward Matters to the Public

The FBI reward of up to $100,000 covers information leading to Nancy's location and the arrest and conviction of anyone involved. The Guthrie family has added a personal reward of up to $1 million (£756,555), pushing the combined total to roughly $1.2 million (£907,866).

Savannah Guthrie, who withdrew from NBC's 2026 Winter Olympics coverage, has repeatedly appealed publicly as the search continues across Arizona.

Where the Investigation Stands Now

The FBI reduced personnel in Tucson and moved its command post to Phoenix, while stressing the shift did not mean the search had ended. A newer message surfaced in late September, which the sheriff's department reviewed and found 'not credible'. Sheriff Chris Nanos has said he still believes an arrest will be made.

For now, the central question stays open. Nancy Guthrie remains missing, and her family is still waiting.
