NYC Doubles Artist Grants to $10K After Nearly 20 Years, Adds Free Supplies Under Mayor Mamdani
The previous $5,000 (£3,780) grant cap had remained unchanged for nearly 20 years.

New York City is doubling its maximum grant for individual artists from $5,000 (£3,780) to $10,000 (£7,565), marking the first increase in nearly two decades. The city is also giving current artist grantees access to free creative materials through a new monthly programme.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) Commissioner Diya Vij announced the changes on Friday, 2 October, as the administration seeks to provide more financial support to artists facing the city's high cost of living.
The city-funded grants, previously capped at $5,000 (£3,780), are distributed through arts organisations in each borough to support artists, collectives and small nonprofits across disciplines including film, dance, writing and painting.
NYC Artist Grants Double to $10K
'Artists are working New Yorkers with the same costs as everyone else,' Mamdani said. 'But while rent, grocery bills and child care costs have skyrocketed in New York City, the funding artists rely on has stayed flat.'
Calling all NYC artists — painters, filmmakers, poets, musicians and more! Did you know our city provides grants to support your work every year?

And this year, for the first time in nearly two decades, we're DOUBLING the amount — from $5,000 to up to $10,000 per artist!… pic.twitter.com/9U2TUm03KZ
Artists can now apply for up to $10,000 (£7,565), although the new figure is a maximum rather than a guaranteed award. The funding is distributed through local regrant partners using annual support from the Department of Cultural Affairs.
The administration said the previous grant level had remained unchanged for nearly 20 years, despite rising living costs and the increasing expense of producing work in New York.
The increased grants are intended to provide greater financial support for artists as they work and create in New York City. The programme covers all five boroughs, with application dates varying by borough.
Free Materials for Artist Grantees
The city is also expanding access to free creative materials through Materials for the Arts, a Department of Cultural Affairs programme that collects donated materials and makes them available to organisations with cultural programming.
Starting in October, current artist grantees of the city's five local arts councils will have access to a dedicated monthly shopping day through Materials for the Arts, where they can obtain donated materials free of charge.
Materials for the Arts collects about four million pounds of donated materials each year. The materials are ordinarily made available to nonprofits, public schools and city agencies with cultural programming across New York.
DCLA Commissioner Vij said the changes followed months of discussions with working artists across the five boroughs.
'These increased grants and free resources from Materials for the Arts represent our first step to deeper, more meaningful support,' Vij said, adding that the aim was to help artists remain in New York.
NYC Artist Grant Deadlines
Applications are currently open in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens, while Staten Island's grant cycle is scheduled to open in November.
The Brooklyn Arts Council deadline is 11 October, followed by the Bronx Council on the Arts on 30 October. Manhattan's Lower Manhattan Cultural Council deadline is 12 November, while the New York Foundation for the Arts deadline for Queens is 17 November.
Artists must apply through the regrant partner serving their borough, rather than through one central citywide application.
The announcement comes as Mamdani's administration expands its arts and culture agenda. The Mayor's Office said the Department of Cultural Affairs' fiscal year 2027 budget is the largest in the city's history, while the administration has also announced free Metropolitan Opera tickets and free or low-cost Broadway tickets for students.
