Rodrigo opened The Unraveled Tour in Hartford, Connecticut, on 25 September, where she performed 'The Cure' beneath artificial rain.

As the water hit her white collared mini dress with a pleated skirt, the outer layer gradually dissolved to reveal a red corseted ensemble underneath, turning a planned costume change into a highly visible stage moment.

The unusual costume was custom-designed and developed by British-Cypriot designer Hussein Chalayan, drawing from his spring/summer 2016 collection Pasatiempo. Chalayan's earlier work featured models standing beneath water as their outer garments dissolved to reveal another look underneath.

The 2016 collection was influenced by Cuba and its changing political and cultural landscape. Chalayan and his team spent around six months developing the water-reactive material, creating garments that could transform when exposed to water.

Rodrigo's version brings that concept into the setting of a concert performance. As she sings The Cure and repeats the words 'I'm unraveled', the white outer layer disappears to expose the red outfit, creating a visual interpretation of the title The Unraveled Tour.

The tour opened with two shows in Hartford before moving across North America and later to Europe. The costume is therefore not simply a conventional outfit change, but one of the production's deliberately timed visual effects.

This is not the first time Rodrigo's fashion choices have prompted discussion online. Earlier in September, she attracted attention for wearing a custom pale pink dress by Palestinian label Nöl Collective ahead of her Daisy Chain Fields festival.

Rodrigo's decision to wear the piece also brought attention to Nöl Collective at a difficult period for the brand. The label had been dealing with disrupted supplies after a fabric shipment was held and later destroyed, according to founder Yasmeen Mjalli, while the singer's commission brought the small fashion house additional visibility.
