Prince William Reportedly 'Horrified' Over Harry and Meghan's Alleged Diana Tribute Plans in UK

Prince William is reportedly 'horrified' by claims that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are developing a television project about Princess Diana in the UK. The allegation comes from an unnamed source, while separate comments by Richard Kay suggest Harry has been contacting people who knew his mother.

The reported project could coincide with the 30th anniversary of Diana's death on 31 August 2027. However, Harry, Meghan, Archewell Productions, Netflix, Kensington Palace and the Spencer family have not publicly confirmed that the programme exists or is in production.

Prince William Reportedly 'Horrified' by Diana Project

Reports circulating in September 2026 trace the initial claim about Harry's alleged project to Kay, the senior editor-at-large. Speaking on Palace Confidential, Kay said, 'I am told that one of the reasons Harry's here is to make a television film, his own film, about his mother.'

Kay added, 'I know he has been reaching out to his friends and others who knew her, asking them to contribute. That's going to occupy a lot of his headspace over the next 12 months.'

The comments indicate that Harry may be exploring a project about Diana and contacting potential contributors. They do not confirm a production title, format, broadcaster, release date or filming schedule.

An unnamed source later quoted by Woman's Day claimed that Meghan could be heavily involved. The source alleged that the couple had been 'collecting footage' and that members of Diana's family, the Spencers, supported the reported project.

No identified member of the Spencer family has publicly confirmed that claim. It should therefore be treated as unverified rather than an established detail.

The same source claimed William was 'horrified' by the prospect of Harry and Meghan taking charge of a tribute to Diana in Britain. 'Hearing that Harry and Meghan Markle are hijacking this tribute to his late mother, and on UK soil, no less, has sent him around the bend,' the source said.

The allegation has not been attributed to William directly. Kensington Palace has not publicly confirmed that he holds this view.

Meghan's Alleged Role Raises Questions

A source also claimed that Meghan's reported involvement was particularly difficult for William. It alleged that Harry believed her participation made 'perfect sense' because she is his producing partner and could bring production experience to the project.

That description reflects Harry's reported perspective, not confirmation that Meghan is working on the Diana programme. Meghan is involved with Archewell Productions, but the company has not announced a Diana film or documentary.

Netflix confirmed on 11 August 2025 that it had extended its creative partnership with Archewell Productions. The agreement is a multi-year first-look deal covering the company's film and television projects.

A first-look arrangement gives Netflix an opportunity to consider Archewell projects first. It does not mean Netflix has commissioned, approved or acquired a programme about Diana.

The anonymous source further claimed that William objected to comparisons between Meghan and his mother. It alleged that he viewed Catherine, Princess of Wales, as a closer comparison because she was less public-facing while remaining devoted to Diana's memory.

Those claims are especially difficult to verify. They should not be presented as William's confirmed opinions, and neither William nor Catherine has publicly endorsed the comparison.

The story also echoes earlier reporting about William's alleged response to fictional portrayals of Diana. In 2023, the Daily Beast quoted one of his friends as saying he was 'totally sickened' by the appearance of Diana's ghost in Netflix's sixth season of The Crown.

'It's incredibly hurtful to have his mother exploited over and over again in this tawdry fashion by Netflix,' the friend said. 'He won't watch it, but he will be totally sickened by it.'

The remarks came from a friend, not from William in a direct statement. They nevertheless provide background to the reported sensitivity around projects involving Diana and Netflix.

What Has Been Confirmed So Far

The confirmed picture is narrower than the headlines suggest. Kay said he had been told that Harry was pursuing a television film and had approached people from Diana's circle. An anonymous Woman's Day source then alleged that Meghan was closely involved and that William opposed the project.

There is no public evidence confirming that the Spencers support it. There is also no announcement from Netflix or Archewell Productions connecting their existing partnership to a Diana production.

The reported project has been framed as a potential tribute to Diana, whose death continues to shape the public lives of both her sons. Yet the available reporting does not establish whether Harry intends to make a documentary, a scripted film or another form of television programme.

That uncertainty matters. The difference between an early idea, private conversations and an officially commissioned production is substantial, especially when the claims concern living members of the royal family.

For now, the alleged Diana project remains a story built on attributed remarks and anonymous-source reporting. Whether it develops into a programme, and whether William has any role in approving or opposing it, has not been confirmed.
