The internet is once again in meltdown over a celebrity conspiracy theory, and this time the spotlight is on pop icon Selena Gomez. A leaked, though unverified, document allegedly from the Jeffrey Epstein files, featuring a cryptic phrase, has reignited rumours that the real 'Who Says' singer is dead and has been secretly replaced.

Gomez's face in her 'In the Dark' music video did not help quench the speculations, as many claimed she looked unrecognisable. What began as scrutiny of the star's health and appearance has spiralled into a full-blown debate over her identity.

'It's Geena Davis': TikTok Fuels The Identity Rumours

Content creator Joysparkleshine recently sparked a massive debate on the platform by questioning the authenticity of the singer's current appearance and identity. In a viral clip, the creator associated Gomez with the late sex offender after the recent trove of Epstein files reportedly mentioned her.

'Not only did he get her too, but he did something unimaginable to her,' Joy said. The TikToker also presented side-by-side comparisons of Gomez's younger self against her most recent public appearances.

'This literally looks like an entirely different face structure,' the creator noted while examining footage from a Rare Beauty promotion.

The video's comments became a breeding ground for even more radical suggestions. A significant number of users noted that the woman in the video bore a striking resemblance to another Hollywood veteran. Many claimed the person on screen was actually Geena Davis, suggesting that a lookalike had been standing in for the singer at high-profile events.

'It's Geena Davis,' one commented. Another added, 'That's Geena Davis, the real Selena is gone now.'

@SlowBrewedTruths admitted that they were also 'falling down the rabbit hole.' According to them, they watched both Gomez and Davis' interviews and noticed that the former has been using the same words and hand gestures as the latter. 'Selena didn't use to move around so much during interviews,' the commenter wrote.

A screenshot circulating on social media showed Epstein's email to someone, whose email address was redacted, on 21 July 2017. In the correspondence, Epstein wrote, 'sorry, you would have fun. A0 he has decided on Selena Gomez.' Many took the word 'diecided' as a hint that the real Selena Gomez was gone.

The TikTok creator added a disclaimer that her content is for 'entertainment purposes only' and reflects her 'commentary, questions and opinions on trending topics.'

The Celebrity Clone Theory Makes A Comeback

This scepticism has reignited the 'clone theory', a long-standing internet trope that suggests doubles replace elite figures. Proponents of this theory argue that the real Selena Gomez is deceased and what people are seeing is just a clone of her.

One commented that her dad 'doesn't even post new pictures of her for her birthday... it's all older ones.' Another suggested that it was 'weird that Taylor Swift isn't her best friend anymore.' Swift and Gomez are close pals, but they aren't seen together as much.

'Justin Bieber even yelled one time "they killed Selena! She is gone!" people thought he was going crazy,' a third person wrote.

While there is no forensic evidence to support the claim that the singer has been swapped, the narrative continues to gain traction on platforms like Tribune.com.pk. These unverified screenshots have convinced a niche audience that the entertainment industry uses advanced technology to maintain the image of stars who are no longer present. The theory relies heavily on the idea that Selena is gone, leaving a double in her place.

Beyond Conspiracy: Lupus, Treatment And Changing Looks

Outside the world of conspiracy, medical experts and fans point to much more grounded reasons for the star's changing appearance. Gomez has been incredibly candid about her battle with lupus, an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack its own tissues. The treatment for this condition often involves the use of corticosteroids, which are well known to cause facial swelling, often referred to as 'moon face'.

Furthermore, the natural ageing process and potential cosmetic procedures can significantly alter one's profile over a decade. While critics argue that her jawline and cheekbones appear fundamentally different, supporters note that fluctuating weight is a common side effect of her life-saving medications.

Gomez herself has previously addressed her critics, stating that she is 'not a model' and will not apologise for the way her body reacts to her health struggles.
