Colombian senator and rising presidential hopeful Miguel Uribe Turbay died aged 39 on Monday, more than two months after he was critically wounded in a shooting at a campaign rally in west Bogotá.

His death has reopened old wounds in a country still grappling with the legacy of political violence—and for a family that has carried it for generations. Police arrested a teenage suspect at the scene on 7 June when he was shot at during a campaign rally.

Attack and Medical Battle

Uribe was shot during a political event in Bogotá, where he suffered gunshot wounds to the head and leg. Emergency surgery was performed immediately, and he was placed in intensive care, where he remained in critical condition for over two months.

Despite medical efforts, Uribe succumbed to his injuries on 19 August. His wife, María Claudia Tarazona, confirmed his death in an emotional Instagram post, describing him as 'the love of my life' and the 'best dad to Alejandro and the girls.'

Investigation and Arrests

Authorities swiftly arrested a teenage suspect at the scene. In the weeks following, several others were detained in connection with the attack. Most notably, police apprehended Elder José Arteaga Hernández, known by the aliases 'Chipi' and 'Costeño,' who is alleged to be the mastermind behind the assassination attempt.

The motive remains under investigation. The shooting has stirred concerns about ongoing political violence in Colombia, a country with a long history of attacks against politicians by drug cartels and insurgent groups.

Political Career and Opposition

Before the attack, Uribe had become a prominent figure within the right-wing Democratic Center party and was known for his vocal criticism of President Gustavo Petro's leftist administration. In October 2024, Uribe announced his candidacy for Colombia's 2026 presidential election.

Starting his political career early, Uribe was elected to Bogotá's city council at the age of 25. He was a strong opponent of Petro during Petro's mayoralty, especially critical of his waste management policies and social programmes.

Family Tragedy and Legacy

The assassination adds to the tragic history of Uribe's family. His mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was kidnapped by the notorious Medellín Cartel and killed in 1991 during a failed rescue operation. The event remains one of the darkest episodes in Colombia's violent past.

Uribe's father, also a journalist, witnessed the toll that violence took on his family. Miguel Uribe's rise in politics symbolised hope for justice and reform amid Colombia's turbulent political landscape.

A Legacy Marred by Violence

The deaths of Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay and his mother, Diana Turbay, mark two generations of a family profoundly affected by Colombia's violent political history. Their untimely deaths show the personal costs borne by families caught in the crossfire of political unrest and criminal influence. Miguel's career, shaped in part by his mother's tragic fate, reflected a commitment to public service and reform, aspirations abruptly ended by violence.

The impact of these losses extends beyond their family as it resonates across Colombia's society and political institutions. Calls for stronger protections for politicians and reforms to combat political violence have intensified with emphasis on the urgent need to safeguard the nation's democratic future.

US Secretary of State Denounces Violence

The attack and Uribe's death were widely condemned. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio denounced the assassination attempt as 'a direct threat to democracy' and criticised 'violent leftist rhetoric' emanating from Colombia's government as partly responsible.

Locally, politicians and citizens mourned the loss of a young leader whose career was cut short amid growing political tensions.
